 Back on meds...sigh...
« Thread Started on Aug 23, 2009, 8:01pm »

Well, after almost a year off his ADHD meds, we started back on medication today. It's been over 7 years since Josh was first diagnosed and I have to say it never get easier when we go back on meds. I'm so conflicted, even though I KNOW he needs them, my heart breaks that he TRULY needs them.

I've had this particular perscription in my purse since March. I debated, I waited, I prayed, but I've know for awhile he needed to be on. I just wanted to give his body a break from meds, and I guess I've done that, but I still feel bad. I don't know why I feel this way, he's even wanted to go back on, so I guess I should be thankful I have no resistance.

He's taking Focalin XR, which is knew to us. We've been through them all...this is our last hope. He did really well on it today, very calm, focused, and no problems. Hubby took him to see the new GI Joe movie this morning and to his surprise, he didn't get up once to move around. Dad said he was very focused and was able to follow the plot without asking any questions, which is rare. The meds lasted for about 6 hours and then the rebound started...it was not too bad. He did get really aggitated (which I expected), but not as bad as in the past with his rebound. I guess we'll have to see after a couple of weeks.

I guess I just needed to get this all out. I was so nervous about putting him back on after all the trouble he's had on meds before. Keep your finger crossed for us and say a little prayer.

I hope it works out for josh. I hate that Chase has to be on the meds too, but like you, I know he needs them. He goes back to school tomorrow, so it is back on the dexadrine for him.

Good luck!

I'll keep him in my prayers. Your doing the right thing Bugs. I know it isn't what you want for him to HAVE to take them. I'm sorry...I know it is hard. Hugs to ya.

I hear what you are saying and think that most of us here have felt similarly. I still have hopes that one day my son might not need them as well. So he is almost 21 and this last summer he was off meds except when he was working at math research or when he'd borrow our car. He did really well when he was off, as opposed to one year ago. This gives me hope for the future.
