He sounds like a really great guy. Working those hours must be really hard on him. I can understand why you don't want to tell him he can't have everything he wants when he gives so much of himself.
You can make your own bed riser by putting cement in coffee cans and letting it harden.
Is there one wall anywhere, where you could put floor to ceiling shelves? You could make them shallow but wide and fit many baskets of small things in them, plus line up his CDs so they are easily accessible but stored neatly.
Something else I thought of is that if you have room for an ottoman or foot stool, you could get the kind that has storage inside. A coffee table and/or end tables with doors or drawers also makes for good hidden storage.

If there was wall space we utilized it early on in moving here. I haven't put shelves on every wall, (I'm kinda tall 5'10") the cieling is 7'5" My hair grazes the cieling fan lights in two different room. My hubby learned to walk around eventually! We have been organising on the past two weekends and while he has been gone at work I've been chucking it all out. The garbage not the comics or games or anything major just all the little crud! It's a work in progress but I'll get there eventually

I somehow missed the part about the long hours he works. Knowing that, I would probably be just like you. I'd want my time with him to be pleasant. It sounds like you are doing what you can by weeding through what is real garbage and what isn't. I know my sister saves everything and it all ends up in a jumbled mess on her desk in my living room. I feel a lot better if I can just seperate the magazines into one pile, mail into another, paperwork into another. Just straighten it all into stacks so they look neat gives me some relief even if they are growing to 2 feet high. You have no idea how many times I just wanted to call someone to take the desk and all out to the junk yard. I don't know how my sister and I came from the same parents. I am a neat freak and she is a junk collector & well, this sounds terrible but a slob. Doesn't make for harmony in this house. LOL

My brother and I were the same way he has everything in it's place or my mom cleans up after him he's only 22 living with mom. My situation is different if I am confined I can't stay orginised, If I have a bigger space I can keep more things in place. We have a tip on a double wide going up for sale that we might be looking at in the near future gosh it would be so nice!! open space Woo Hoo!! Maybe my brother would like my house.
