What a meeting...last year we had her in a private school...actually, since pre-K, she'd been in a private Catholic school...and for 3 years, we got the same story...she's not listening, she gets in other people's space, she does as she pleases, she won't raise her hand, she doesn't do what she's asked to do...blah blah blah...so, after 3 years of thinking "she'll outgrow it"...we got her tested...and diagnosed with ADHD, combined type, LDs in English and math, ODD and possible bi-polar tendencies...so that's a handful!
Fast forward last year to barely eeking out of F's in 2 marking periods in private school (pre-testing) to getting through (after being put on meds mid-January) with an A or two, a few B's, a C and a D on her final report card this past June. But, after being told by the principal (after I said that I didn't want her in one particular grade 2 teacher's room - that's a whole other story!) that they didn't have the resources available to fully help her succeed, we put her and her older sister in public school. I got the ball rolling and after months and months, we got her an IEP with 3 hours of special ed a day in math and language arts.
So, today at the first parent/teacher meeting at the new school....I'm told that she's a great student and is getting better at raising her hand and is phenomenal at comprehending concepts that they're teaching...far more so than most of the other kids in her class! The special ed teacher wants to mainstream her in language arts, and not that Megan's regular teacher doesn't want her in there, but she said that there are 5 discipline problem children in her regular class (and she did hint that they had issues that aren't being addressed by the parents) and that she doesn't want that to have any impact on Megan as she's come so far (and the teacher is working on Megan's tattle tale tendencies...so with kids acting up...she's sure to either join in or rat them out....)
BUT, they talked of how well she's doing and seeing if there is a spot in the gifted program!!! Like, pick my jaw up off the freakin' floor.....from a kid failing with F's at this exact time last year to being suggested for the gifted program? Ummm....she's a poster child for how well meds CAN work! (And this new school isn't hurting either.)
And not to knock my older daughter....she has 3 A's and 2 B's....but that's her norm....for Megan....this is nothing short of freakin' miraculous! Crap....now I sound like I'm short changing my older child...but I really do make a big deal of ALL good grades....and as long as it's the hardest that they tried....then that's fine.
