I'm seriously considering cyber school when Shannon reaches 9th grade. I'm hoping they address LD's in their curriculum. I just don't know what else to do. The HS is getting dangerous & unless the administration address it properly, I don't feel its a safe environment. Its gotten so bad that there are now police patrolling the halls!
Last week there was a bomb threat & the school was evacuated. Several fights broke out in the hallway, where one teacher was hurt while another staff member was injured by some object thrown by one of the students. Another staff member had a punch thrown at him. Once the fights were broken up, a fire alarm was pulled, causing the students to evacuate the building for a second time. 10 students were arrested & 2 students taken to Juvenile Detention Center. Two male students were charged with aggravated assault for attacking a guidance counselor and a female student is facing charges for allegedly assaulting a co-principal.
The school plans to install new surveillance cameras in the cafeteria and hallways that are most heavily traveled by students, according to its Web site. 2 weeks ago ,The district was criticized by local police departments and the district attorney's office for covering up crimes on campus. The administration denies these allegations. However, the violence occurring within the schools is not uncommon for the students. Most students say they have become used to the bomb threats, fights, riots, arrests, gang violence, and numerous other illicit activities that occur on a daily basis. Students have come to expect a certain level of chaos within their schools and must learn to get through the school day without getting involved in some sort of altercation.
The schools big answer to all this??? Kids in Jr high & HS are now prohibited from wearing "hoodies". What the heck??? That is NOT an answer! The school says when the kids pull the hoods up, they cannot tell who's who. If you ask me, thats a load of bull! They could figure it out. The administration needs to get the disciplinary problems out of there so the bulk of the kids, who are good & want to learn , CAN learn & not be afraid! It seems to me that the administration is afraid of the problem kids.
Well, I just needed to vent about that. The district did not used to be like this. It used to be a pretty good district, but how can I send my daughter off to the HS in a year in a half if it stays like this? I can't. I can't put her life in danger.
