Sean's psych just called and she is furious with the insurance company. They gave her a hard time about the Adderall for some reason even going as far to tell her she should try Straterra first. She said she screamed at them for half an hour since they can't even pronounce the name of the med correctly yet they are telling her what to prescribe for a child they have never seen...and theyre not doctors! They said she has to send them a letter stating that he needs the Adderall but told her it probably won't be approved because she hasn't tried anything else yet. She was shocked and said she never encountered this before. I jus called the pharmacy and told them to fill it and we'll just pay for it.

Good for you! I hope it works and helps him calm down. I can't believe insurance companies and hmo's. I realize they have to watch the bottom line but drs know what is best for the patient.

I had a similar problem with asthma meds for jake a few years back. We had used a sample of advair and it did wonders for him, but when I went to fill the prescription, the insurance company said we had to try some less expensive med first....I was mad, but could not afford the $245 a month for the advair...then I found out a few weeks later that one of my head start parents got the advair no questions asked on MEDICAID!!!
Needless to say, I was furious that I was working to pay for another child to use a med, that my insurance (provided through my work) would not approve for my own son....

We have Adderall!! Tomorrow will be the big day. The psych. said we will know real quick if it works for or against him. I have to take Joe and his friend up to the middle school to try out their lockers, go buy my books for school and a few other errands so it will be a test. Please pray it works, today was a bad one and I'm running so low on patience.

I was hoping for option A which would be that the Adderall worked. I was prepared for option B which would be it had an adverse reaction and he raged for hours uncontrollably. But I was not prepared for option C which was NOTHING. A big fat nothing. Absolutely nothing. I swear it's gonna take a horse tranquilizer to bring this kid down to "regular."

Just when you're prepared for something....you got zilch....I'm so sorry. I've heard that it sometimes takes a few days to get in their system....but that's only what I've heard. Megan's on Adderall XR 20 mg right now and that is working really well for her...curbs her backtalk, rudeness and hyperactivity and really gives her some focus....I'd so love to tel lyou to give it a while, but knowing how he is.....I can only hope they give you some Valium to help cope, too!!!!

When Christian first started on his meds, I was hoping the same thing and day 1 and 2 nothing, nothing changed, I did call the physch and they made me give him 2 instead of 1 and that is when I finally saw the difference, he was 6 at the time...and up until now at 12, he has a very high tolerance for meds, so he may be like him and need to start at the higher dose, then lower down to one that works, not the opposite way of starting low and increasing up...hope it helps, and that you had a better day....

The psychiatrist did call me today to make sure he had no bad side effects and I told her he had NO effects. She said to keep the dosage where it is now and she will call me Tuesday and if they still aren't helping she will up the dosage then.
