Well, today is my usual 6 month appointment to the Dentist and I have my usual anxiety, except for some reason it's pretty bad. I actually had pains in my chest most of the night. I had some pretty bad experiences with a dentist when I was a child and I know that is part of it but I also know that the ADD is part of it too. I need to be getting to work and I am lingering. I wish I could just sit and write all day. I've been so busy, we've had problems with Becca(getting better now) that I just feel overwhelmed with everything today. It's only a cleaning today and I am praying for no problems. I'm a nervous wreck even with cleanings, although I am very diligent in the care of my teeth. Unfortunately I wasn't when I was a kid and have had to get a lot of work done in the past. No root canals or crowns yet, my worst fear. I actually have to get some novacaine for a couple of sensitive teeth I have and the rest of my gums numbed or I can't tolerated the scraping. Gosh I wish there was an easier way. I feel sick but I've got to get to work. Sorry for the silly post, but I just needed to vent. Boy do I feel ADD today. Gotta run. Be back as soon as I can. Cross your fingers I get another clean bill of health with my choppers.

Oh my gosh losty! I thought I was the only adult with those feelings!! I had a horrible dentist when I was young as well (he smoked and this was before the gloves were worn routinely, YUKKK) and he was not child friendly at all!!! Add to the fact that there were 8 of us, and mom only took us in when we had a major problem (no routine cleanings there!) and you get a total negative experience.
I have always taken my kids in every 6 months even though we have no insurance, and they don't bat an eye when the day approaches, we have a really great dentist....but I am always pondering if I can come up with a reason to cancel...fortunately the girls at the office know of my dilemma, so I never do call it off, but I can totally understand where you are coming from!

I don't much like the dentist either - I always tell him it is nothing personal!!! The sounds of the dentist office are what really bugs me the most and I can work myself into not going to the dentist til a problem is bad enough to cause pain.
I grew up in a military family and the dental care was on the bases we lived on and they would give you these huge fillings that were overkill - as an adult I had to have the few I have replaced and it sux!!!

Thats funny...I never realized so many people hate the dentist. I love the dentist! I had a marvelous dentist as a child. He was funny & had all sorts of child friendly procedures. I love the feeling of my teeth after a cleaning too. Shannon doesn't mind the dentist either, although she's not too fond of the orthodontist!

Losty you are so not alone in your feelings about the dentist. I need to go myself as I know I have a cavity but cannot bring myself to make an appt. It's not so much the fear in my case but the whole experience makes me sick. You know the feeling you get when someone scratches a chalkboard? Well thats how I feel the entire time I am at the dentist. The sounds and the smells make my blood run cold and its hard to feel that way for a straight hour. Your feelings are not silly at all. Now here's something silly-I am deathly afraid of fish, all fish. I cannot stand to even look at them. At Sean's psych. appt. the other day we walk in to the waiting room and there is this HUGE fishtank with this HUGE fish. It was like 2 feet long and fat. My eyes popped out of my head and I almost threw up. I wasnt comfortable sitting anywhere in the room as I did not want to look at it nor did I want my back to it. We had an hour wait to see the Dr. and I told my H that by the time we got in I would need to talk to her myself about the post traumatic stress I had now from looking at that fish for an hour.

KK, do you EAT fish? Just curious. I think everyone has a fear of something. Any creature with more than 4 legs totally creeps ME out. I get the shakes & everything if I just see a spider! The only insects I can stand at all are lightening bugs & lady bugs! Even a picture of an insect scares me!

WOW - that whole fish thing is wild? I could not survive not looking at fish!!! I wonder what casues that?
I love fishing and eating fish, especially salmon!!!
I kinda feel that way about styrofoam - it makes me sick to look at it and touch it and even if I see someone across the room with a cup of it - I have to look away - the brain is a funny thing? When I was in elementary school they had styrofaom lunch trays (before we knew how bad they were for the world), and I would not eat lunch just so I would not have to touch them and my teacher would try to force me to get lunch. One day I beat up the poor kid across the lunch table cause he thought it was funny to scratch his fork across it and bug me!!! I got suspended from school!!! Kinda makes me get the willies talking about it now.

My kids love the dentist too, I have made sure of that...he is great, and has kids the same age as my boys, classmates of theirs. I did not want the cycle repeated....and I tell my dentist that it is nothing against him too!

I think we should frame this and send it to dentists around the world. I think it would make their day!! I am not a fan of dentists and have been known to reschedule appointments but most of the time I force myself to go because I do like to take care of my teeth. I too HATE the smell and sounds. Ewe...just thinking about them creeps me out. I would have to say going to a dentist is my least favorite thing to do.
