Hi
I found your site quite by accident, while I was searching the words psuedoword decoding. My daughter who was identified as having LD at the age of 8 on the month of April, 2004. I was told at that meeting her problems are low-phonemic awareness, sequencing and short-term memory. The school educational psychologist called it a language-based disorder, and therefore she met the qualifications for special education under learning disabilities. I did not received a copy of the assessment at that time, nor anything else related to her ISSP.
Throughout the years, I have struggled to get her the right help at the school and I have often wonder why she was not getting it at the school level. Well, I found out the reason when I finally received a copy of her one and only assessment. The educational psychologist insists she does not have dyslexia, because her only problem scores are in pseudoword decoding (77) and in math the numerical operations (66). The second reason is she has the ability to read. Remedial help is the only remedy.
Well, in the last few days I spent all my time on the computer learning, discovering and quite frankly I am mad at the whole education system. I have spent these years wasting my time and loosing valuable time for my daughter trying to persuade educators that my daughter needed certain classroom accommodations and therapies. At no time, did anyone correct my impressions on what was wrong with her. I feel like a fool, but I am really mad being manipulated into thinking that all were on the same page.
Add what I have learned in the past few days, I eat my hat if she is not a dyslexic. I can go one step further, I believe she is phonological dyslexic based on research papers done after the year 2000, my observations at home and the countless hours of tutoring done at home.
The rose - frustrated, mad and determined to proved that my daughter is a dyslexic!
