Pamela,
Ok first of all, are you sure you're not talking about my son? I swear I feel like I'm reading my own post.
Second of all. If you are interested in looking into food allergies, this is a great book to start:
www.amazon.com/This-Your-Child-Doris-Rapp/dp/0688119077/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1211459073&sr=8-1
It tells you how to do the testing for each type of food. (it's very non-invasive) I didn't do all the foods, but I did figure out my son is allergic to milk. I'm taking him to an allergist at the end of May, I suspect Strawberries too.
I'm struggling with the possibility of bi-polar as well. But my son has it in his family history. An Uncle, a grandmother, and a great uncle. All estranged of course, so I have no one to talk to that may be able to help me through some of this.
Impulse control & Anxiety & Depression are all on my list as well. (or his list anyways)
We tried ritalin, once. It didn't work for him. I think that is the "good" thing about trying a stimulant. If it doesn't work, you'll know that day. Its not like you need to try it for a week before you figure it out. Also, you mention being on ritalin for years and it's affects. I would try to scale down your thinking. Ritalin for the rest of his life is a long time, and I would think, not probable. Also, look for Pro-Ritalin information to balance your Con-Ritalin arguements. You can find bad and good news for everything now a days. My sister is deathly afraid of milk now because her son is allergic. She's read all these horror stories about how evil milk is. So her whole family is off of milk. She even tells me there's a conspiracy regarding the FDA and pediatricians etc.
Anyway, if you ever need to talk, you can definately find a friend in me. I soooo know where you are coming from. Good luck
