Thanks lcdc for a most interesting topic. Great! There is a name for it! Now I understand much better why I felt bad and frustrated when visiting relatives repeatedly said that I "should" do this or that. Their suggestions were meant to be encouraging, positive and intended as compliments, but the delivery made me feel terrible, because I knew I might never do it or even want to do it...hence a set up for failure. At the time I wondered why it made me feel terrible altho I knew it was meant as a compliment, excused the blunder and passed it off as habits of speech within their family. In addition I was really at a loss as to how to discuss my distaste for their "shoulds" with them. With some thought I might come up with a sensitive way to respond next time. ;D Sincerely, I'm sending you a big "Thank you!"

Cool, jfla, I am glad it helps you! Hope your trying to deal with it is successful! I guess the question we all need to answer is how do we talk ourselves? Do you use the moral imperatives? I sure did and still do even though I am working hard not to do that!

It's Monday! Sigh.
Tonight at Net Haven, we have a question to answer: Why do we find it so hard to see ourselves as worthy people? Why do we accept low self-esteem so readily? We'd like to know what you think.
Please join us any time between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern (for times in other zones, please visit our global time chart). Your hosts will be Socks and Marge.
Please join us tonight at our chat page. We'll hope to see you then!
Peace, marge marge@net-haven.net

Peace, marge marge@net-haven.net Thanks for the invite Marge though I probably will not be able to make it. PS ~ Could you ask the host "Socks'' where the heck my left green argyle sock is? It's been in the family for years and my life is just not the same without it.
