MYTH 5 - ADHD is a result of bad parenting.
FACT - Geeze do people really believe you are a bad parent if your kid has ADD?
OK, so the fact is kids do not act this way because they have not been taught right, it is because they cannot control those impulses. The problem, according to the magazine, is brain chemistry, not discipline. In fact, overly strict parenting - which could involve punishing a child for things they cannot control - can make the symptoms of ADHD worse (AMEN, lived that fact as a kid!). Professional interventions, such as drug therapy, physcotherapy, modification behavior therapy, are usually required!
Wow is all I have to say, wish my one parent had read and lived by these words! AH well, I cannot change the past, but I can spread the word on ADHD advocacy and hope some other kid in life can be spared the torture of beating it out or yelling it out of them!

I'm guessing that that few if any parents do this kind of parenting intentionally. We all (as parents) just get frustrated & freak out when we don't know how or what discipline/help our kids Or we need when we come up against a wall.

OK, last one!
MYTH - Children who take ADHD medications are more likely to abuse drugs when they become teenagers.
FACT - This has been shown to actually be the opposite. Having untreated ADHD increases the risk that an individual will abuse drugs or alchohol. Appropriate treatment(s) reduce these risks. The medications, according to the article, have been proven safe and effective for more than 50 years. The medications will not cure ADHD, but they are very effective at easing many symptoms of the disorder. The drugs do not turn kids into addicts or zombies!
OK, last comment from me on this and that is so true about untreated ADHD and the likelyhood of using illegal substances or dangerous stuff to try to slow your head down! Been there, Have Done that! For the folks in LCdc world, they know me pretty well and know that I was using alchohol to calm (numb) my brain and that leads to a vicuious cycle of problems on top of ADHD. I am very glad to share this with you all and a little insight into some of my personal struggles that some on here know too well. A year or more ago, I was in a bad place with ADHD and making things worse on myself, but I am proud to say, I am not ashamed of myself for the most part and I am working on improving my life and the life of my children and if I can manage my ADHD and still be alive, anyone can do it with the proper help!
So that is all from the article I read,, I will try to post more stuff this month to do with ADHD and the awareness stuff - BUT please help me out - do you all know any myths and facts?
;D

Here's a myth I'll be glad to see dispelled.
Myth: ADHD is a form of mental retardation
Fact: Many kids with ADHD and other disorders have high IQs. A child with ADHD has the same chance of any IQ as any child without a disorder. ADHD affects processing but it doesn't prevent learning, just makes it more difficult.

OK, now that we started in on ADHD awarness month, what is the one thing that you would want to share with those that are not knowledgable about the nuerological disorder?
I would want to share this one thing right now - even though I act spastic at times and get stuck with finding the right words at times and forget simple words when hyped up - I am not stupid!

MYTH 5 - ADHD is a result of bad parenting. FACT - Geeze do people really believe you are a bad parent if your kid has ADD? I believe they think you are a bad parent and there is no such thing as ADHD. I really hate to admit this now but when my niece was DX'd with ADHD I was so skeptical when I hopped on the internet to find out more about it. Wow were my eyes opened because I was reading about myself and two of my sisters.
