Well it sound like I'm on the right track. My son has had many assessemnts culminating in an Ed. psych. visit to bring in the final dx of ADHD (more inattentive) He was great and very helpful. He has told me to see a pediatrician. Do pediatricians do all the necessary tests to A) confirm dx B) further tests. I'm also lurking at the Aussie forum to get some local input which helps. Out of interest what is the diff b/w a ed psychologist and a neuropsychologist?

In my experiences, pediatricians normally do not do any of the testing for ADHD. That may be different in Australia, I don't know, and there are exceptions in the US, but most pediatricians here don't do the tests.
Neuropsychiatry is the medical specialty committed to better understanding brain-behavior relationships, and to the care of individuals with neurologically based cognitive, emotional, and behavioral disturbances. The Neuropsychiatrist treats people with neurologic illness and cognitive, emotional, or behavioral problems; individuals with combined psychiatric illnesses and neurologic conditions.
Educational psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the learning processes and psychological issues associated with the teaching and training of students. The educational psychologist studies the cognitive development of students and the various factors involved in learning, including aptitude and learning measurement, the creative process, and the motivational forces that influence student-teacher dynamics.
I've never been to an Ed. psych before, but it seems one would be very beneficial to our kids.

Basically, a psychologist covers many psychological issues and a neuropsychologist covers the neurological ones (the wiring in the brain itself), so a neuro is usually better equipped to spot the differences between ADHD and other things that resemble it.
You can find more information in our board in Medical Information. I was going to put a link to an article here but when I went there, I realized you will have a lot of your concerns answered just by going there and reading what we have.

Myriad, sorry I´am shiming in so late. I wanted to welcome you as well as the other´s, I love to see how international this forum can get, adhd is deffenately not an nationality-issue Your though´s and concern´s sound so familiar to me too, so you´l see it´s the same for everyone at the beginning; fear, frustration..... all the way. But you´re on the right track now. When I first got the dx to my son, I got right to the internet and started shcearching for info, it saved my sanity, to find other´s who have done the same and are in the midle of it. My son was on med´s for 2 and half y, he has been off for the fall semester and continues that way, seem´s like he´s doing rather well now, he´s 11 and half. Ped neuro was the doc that dx´d and decided about the med´s in here, I dont know about Australia thou... Anyway, welcome!!!
