Does anyone know how much a lap pad should weigh? I know it's up to 10% of the total body weight, but I'm wondering it I should start lower. The weights are 2.5 lbs, 3.5 lbs, 5 lbs, 7 lbs.

I don't even know what a weighted lap pad is, sorry. I know about weighted blankets but the lap pad is a new one to me. What is it for?

It's for self-regulation. It's suppose to calm the nervous system and help focus. They are used in classrooms. Same idea as a weighted vest, except it sits on the lap. The OT recommended it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Post everything here, notellin. Others might not have heard of them either & their kids might benefit from them!

Thanks, the second you said it was for the same thing as the vest, I knew what you meant.
I think a lot depends on the child. Do you have to order it or can you possibly take your child and have him test each weight, then ask him what one he likes best? If you try ones that are identical except for weight, he will be likely to pick the one thats most comfy for him.

katiekat, that is the exact idea. My son has problems with proprioceptive input, which I think is an OT term. The solution is deep pressure. My OT did not recommend the vest because children get used to it quickly and then it no longer works. He recommended a weighted lap pad or a weight draped around the shoulders, like a weight snake. I think the idea is that these come on and off but the vest just stays on. My son is sensory seeking and is a fidgeter, so I may find one with interesting feeling fabric, or sew some buttons on.

Thats a great idea notellin. He can have a fidget toy built right in.
Have you considered trying one of those things that are filled with sand or rice that you heat in the microwave? They have long ones that he could drape, wrap or just set on his lap. It might give you an idea of how well it was going to work for him.
I've heard the weighted vests and blankets are expensive so I would think anything that might help you figure out what the best option would be, might be good to try first.
