jjThis was posted a long time ago on another site and I lost the link and someone just posted it again. It is what an 8 yr. old Aspergers boy sounds like and a 11 yr. old girl. When I listened to this I realized my nephew sounds exactly like the boy...I mean exactly!!! www.pediatricneurology.com/aspergers_sound.htm

My son is 23 and I have been trying for 20 years to get a diagnosis and 2 weeks ago we got it. He has Aspergers. It was amazing because 90% of the things that physicians have treated him for or tested him for because of his complaints were all symptoms of this syndrome. If you don't have a diagnosis hang in there and tell your Dr. that you want your child evaluated for it. I home schooled him from 7th thru 12 grade and I am glad I did. He did well on the GED and I inadvertently did the right things to help him. Lyn

Just wanted to correct my post. I wrote nephew but it is actually my grand nephew.
Lyn, My niece also homeschooled her kids and I must say she has done a wonderful job with her son, my grand nephew. I can't say she should have done anything differently. She has never looked for a DX and I don't think she will.
Her husband recently accepted the pastor position in a new church and it also supports a Christian school. This year they decided to send their eldest son (the one I believe is Aspergers) to this school. He is doing really well academically but socially he is struggling.
Honestly, I'm not sure if getting an official DX would make things better for her son or not. I have never stuck my nose in their business and don't intend to but what benefits do you think there are, if I may ask, that you have finally got an official DX for you son at age 23?

JJ, Once the diagnosis is made there is therapy to help the person develop communication skills and other interpersonal skills. Research shows the younger the person is the better they do. There are also special colleges or help from regular colleges as they continue their education. I thought it might be to late but my son wants to socialize, date and work. Even mild Aspergers interferes with their ability to do those things and the older a person gets the more it interferes with their life. Depression is number one in the list of things they have to contend with and meds alone don't work because the cause is still there. Lyn

Thanks Lyn,
You kind of affirmed what I was thinking - at least somewhere along those lines. Which is why I'm concerned my niece has never sought a DX for her son. Is he going to suffer the consequinces when he is older? (I think he is in 5th or maybe 6th grade)
And the big question. Do I stick my nose where it doesn't belong? I guess I'm the only one that can answer that as I know my neice the best but a very tough one.

JJ, I suggest that you just tell her about my son and then see where it leads you. This truck and snow remind of the outdoors today and I wish I had that truck to move it.

I just got the book they mentioned from the library. My son is 17, but he sounded very much like the 8 year old boy. Takes him forever to actually get anywhere when he is trying to tell you something. He talks a mile a minute, but seems to talk in circles. Very interesting. My son doesn't have a dx either.

That sounds like my 5 year old. He talks in circles he makes no sense, he is so passionate at the wrong time or his emotions don't fall into the right catagory for the situation. One day I hope for a break through, a miracle. One day I hope for a cure. One day at a time, I hope I'll get through the day. The waiting, the wondering, and the second guessing myself. One day at a time.

I couldn't get the audio to play, but the PDF you can download that explains the spectrum is excellent! This is a great link.

I can't get the audio to work either. I emailed the webmaster of that site so maybe they will look into it. I even downloaded their recommended audio program and still no luck.
