Over the past week Sean seems to be in the same depressed funk he was in about a year ago. It was his behavior at that time that prompted me to first take him to a psychiatrist. It seems to be picking up again. He seems subdued, he has been quieter than usual-he has not gotten in trouble all week for talking at school. While this is a good thing its definitely out of the ordinary. He is also not sleeping well again and this hasnt happened in a long time. Then this morning he told me that his nightmares are starting again. Although I am on the fence about the bipolar diagnosis Im wondering if this is a "cycle" and now he is in the depressed stage. Maybe the other 99% of the time he is manic. Could he have BP and Aspergers? I need a live in psychiatrist over here.

Its possible to have both. Some of the reading I have been doing indicates that may be quite common. There are also many similarities between the two so it is possible for one to be misdiagnosed as the other. Symptoms of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and anxiety are usually present in both bp and aspergers. Anxiety can manifest in such a way that a child would appear manic. It might help if you keep a diary detailing his moods and what behavior he is showing and when he is showing it so you can look for a definite pattern if there is one. It there isn't one, it will show that too. Please be prepared to hear that Sean has learning disabilities also. I haven't found anything yet to explain his severe problems with learning and they can definitely add or exacerbate depression and anxiety. You are getting to the point where you will have some answers. Its been a long haul but his appointment that is coming up in February should really get things moving for you.

The great thing KK is that you have read up on all these things. You have prepared yourself well for that appointment coming up. If the psych says it is just aspergers you can question him on it rather than just take his word for it. You are well armed and I know you will get to the bottom of things.

hang in there and I hope you do get answers too, maybe the physc will know some stuff for you, I think it is important that kids and adults that go through this stuff get longer term therapy, counseling, whatever, so these different moods and fluctuations can be explored, that is an advantage for kids, there parents can help write down and remember some iof these different things. Somtimes adults only seek help when in trouble and crisis and get a misdiagnosis, it is better to see everything cycle through and work it out before labeling the issue and treatin part of the problem or the wrong one!
