well I sent in the paperwork today to the school and school board for summer school. watching Tiff struggle to do her homework each night and knowing now that all of the adults involved will not be able to help her keep up all summer, made my decision come right in front of me. we wouldn't be able to start any help until at least 5:30 each night and that is too late to have her concentrate on school type activities.
she was better with it last night, since she realizes it is only 1/2 day and then she can go to camp.
her psychologist said yesterday that she thought it was for the best too.

During the summer, I do schoolwork with Shannon in the evenings to keep her refreshed. After dinner we sit for a half hour to an hour.....it works pretty well. But each child is different. I hope the summer school works out & Tiff responds favorably.

We went in for parent teacher conferences today and the teacher said Jake HAS to go to summer school. I knew he would. She said he will not be able to keep up in first grade with the academic critia if he does not get the extra schooling in the summer. He has several different areas he has delays in so we have no choice in this matter. I'm sure he will have plenty of summer fun around the 3 hour morning class they have set up for him. The good news to all of this is that it is paid for by the school district, and I don't have to take anything out of pocket.

So, help my memory here, does he have an IEP? I'm afraid this is part of the Response to Intervention (RTI) Model, which I have supported. Of course, it's just like my fellow educators to take what sounds like and could be a great idea and drive it into the ground. No, we won't give kids IEP's before we give them all the help we can give them. Oh, but this includes summer school, regardless of how hard your child has worked throughout the year to achieve passing grades and regardless of how many hours your child has spent in private tutoring. Your child gets to go to summer school, too, and if you complain or question what we are doing, then don't expect our help next year. Oh, and if your child needs an IEP with specialized instruction, well, if you had sent your child to summer school, then your child wouldn't need it. I try to keep a positive attitude on this board, so I apologize to everyone, but this really bugs me.

Lillian, I must say, I completely agree with you. Shannon works her heart out all year & she NEEDS summer vacation free of school work! Luckily the year they suggested summer school for Shannon, she was in the private school. She didn't have an IEP there, but they didn't insist she go to the summer sessions either, just suggested it. By the time I moved her to public she had 2 LD's diagnosed for a year & a half so pushing for an IEP right away worked pretty well. I remember summers as a kid...running barefoot, sleeping late as I wanted. staying up late....I think kids desperately need that...as you said, especially our kids who try so hard all year & find school so stressful at times.

Lillian, you are being honest. Some schools do exactly that and it is frustrating. If we can't take our frustrations out here, then most of us would have no where to air them. Feel free to vent. Thats why we are ADHD&LD SUPPORT!

Thanks for the support, everyone!
Misty,
Ah, yes, I remember those summer days, too, and I had a great time. I couldn't wait for the last day of school each year, but I looked forward to going back to school once the end of August rolled around, and I loved buying my school clothes and supplies (my son is the same way, but, shhhhh, don't tell anyone). Without the three-month break, I know I would have cared less about going back to school.

Liliian, yes, Shannon gets excited too. Personally, I think she just loves the shopping trips!
