We have been working with an ND (Naturopathic Doctor) to perform some neurotransmitter testing on our son. The test is easy to perform and is done in your home (urine test) and then sent to the company. Testing must be done under a doctor's recommendation/supervision. If you are interested in doc's in your area who would help you can go on the website of the company that we used and they will identify those in your area who can help. We have used NeuroScience which is a comany out of Wisconsin. Their website is www.neurorelief.com.
There are two types of neurotransmitters in the brain: excitatory and inhibitory. Both have several "kinds" of each. When you receive the results of the test, you also receive "optimal ranges" of each of the neurotransmitters so you have a comparison point for your results.
Our initial test showed extremely HIGH exitatory neurotransmitters -- off the charts, in fact. This was no surprise to us b/c our son in HYPER. His inhibitory were not high enough to compensate for the extremely high excitatory. He also had high histamine which indicated an allergy or sensitivity to something he was ingesting.
At this point, we have had our son on supplements recommended by our ND to help balance his neurotransmitters for about 2 months. We have excluded dairy (or caesin) from his diet and have decreased his wheat/glueten intake. We will be re-testing this weekend to see how much we have balanced him out but I can say I have seen marked improvement in his behavior.
Please feel free to post/PM questions. It's a very cool thing to get a picture of what is going on in the brain!

I have a question. What type of testing do they do (I mean is it blood tests,..etc) and how long does the testing take?
Whats the cost (you don't need to tell me exactly I reaklize thats a personal question but a valid one since I'm on a semi-tight budget as it is)?
Does insurance cover any of the cost?
Ok, I realize thats MORE than one question! Sorry. Before I got too excited I had to ask those Questions though.

The tests are urine tests your collect in your home. The kit comes with detailed instructions and you do it yourself.
It costs approximately $190 and takes about 2 weeks to get the results. The results were sent to my doc and then we "met" to discuss. He sent me the results as well but helped me understand them in our meeting.
Our insurance (Cigna) covered $114 of the $190! I thought that was pretty daggone good! Blue Cross/Blue Shield will also help with coverage and even helps to pay for certain Naturopathic Docs. I'm going to work on my insurance on that one next!
Hope that answers your ?'s I'm happy to answer more.
