Since being a participant on adhd forums, i have been enlightened to how people deal with adhd. But, I often wonder how people cope and what methods they use to settle the random thoughts and ideas that come into their heads and can interupt their lives?
I started this electronic journal that i keep on my computer, it is not a daily log by any means, but it is like a "blog" that i keep to just dump thoughts into. I also use the old stanby of keeping small pocket pads of paper in my jeans and in the car and on my desk to collect random thoughts. BUT, I am always concerned that if someone picked up the pads or my notes or saw the journal, they might think whoa, this person is nuts?

Personally I have troubles staying focused most of the time, but I have found I tend to be more productive at night around midnight. I am able to focus on one task and my mind doesn't wander as much. I tend to do the dishes take out the trash fold laundry and yes jump on the computer during the piece and quiet while the kids are all in bed. Chasing after them is a full time job that usually takes up a large amount of energy, so I feel more comfortable doing things when they are not around. If something is really important like a phone call I use post its and I put them in several places to get me focused on just doing it bathroom mirror, refridgerator, computer and the TV all my points of weakness.

I do my best early in the mornings and seem to not do so well the later in the day it gets. Maybe it is because I drink the most coffee early in the morning... hey, I should have thought about that before...

wow this was an old post of mine! Yeah, coffee is definitely a focus tool for folks like us, problem with me is I would keep needing more and more and more of it. Since this post I have made progress with my physc and added another medication to my concerta, actuley 2 new meds and it is working like a charm for me. I was very resistant to it, but found out nothing else worked for me and I had no options left!

I am glad to hear that medication is working for you. I haven't yet found a medication I can tolerate. I do a lot of work on mentally conditioning myself... meditation, self improvement - I used to play a lot of pool and being that pool is a mental game, it helped me develope skills and habits which help me in everyday life... thank goodness...

It is good that you are finding positive things to do to help out! Somtimes adults with ADHD lean on not so positive ways to cope or deal with it. I use relaxation pod casts that I copied from my physc that are breathing and visualization type stuff. I also make sure that I am doing some type of physical activity each day.
Pool is a good thing to get your focus on also! I never thought about that, but I do like pool, maybe that is why?
Since I have stopped my negative coping mechanisms, I have returned to drawing each night and have even expanded to try different mediums of art beyond pencil drawings, it really relaxes me and takes all my focus so that I do not feel like I am hit with a million random thoughts at a time.

You know, Lc, Shannon is a lot like you. She uses drawing, writing & creating as an outlet. Shes much calmer afterwards. Another thing she does (which infuriates me but seems to relax her) is rearrange her room. Every week or so she takes everything off her shelves, dressers & closet & sorts & organizes it. I'm not sure why she does this since there's really no need but it seems to calm her spirit. It only infuriates me because it seems unnecessary to me & because it makes such a HUGE mess until its done.,....I mean a spill out in to the hallway kind of mess. When she gets really restless she takes the dog (misty, not Scruffy) for a long long walk.

OMG misty, that is funny about rearranging the room thing! My kids freak out because every few weeks I do that to my room and the living room! Wierd! Shannon is a lot like me, she is just less hyper!

It is so funny reading about that about the room. If you read my book you will find out that I did that a lot as a kid and it helped me a lot. That's so interesting that you posted about that ;-) I guess it is something which calms us down, but doing something creative and entertaining for our minds. It is so rewarding once the room is changed around, each and every time ;-)
