Diversion from Reality Teens and Entertainment May 27, 2008 The University of Minnesota School of Health recently published a study documenting how teenagers who have a television in their bedroom are more likely to have unhealthy lifestyles: from poor eating habits, to bad grades, to less time spent with the family. The results of the study are by no means surprising. Increasingly we live in an entertainment-saturated culture, and teens like any first-adopters of new trends, live in the forefront of societal shifts. Thanks to television, movies, text-messaging, virtual gaming, chat rooms, and websites like Facebook, entertainment and diversion are always just a click away for teens these days. And while teens do need some "down time" to escape the pressures of school or even work, something is wrong when "down time" becomes "all the time." that is very true! My kids have little 13 inch tv's in their rooms that are only hooked up to a dvd player so if they have friends over, they can hang out in there!
I find that most of them want to watch movies on our 52 inch though, the tv's in their rooms have probably not been used in 3 months!
Their generation is definitely one of fast electronic satisfaction. The thing I hate the most for my 14 year old is text messaging! She has unlimited texting and last month she has 12,490 messages! I have since limited her times that she can be on her cell phone!

Thats so true John! What a great article. Shannon has all that stuff in her room, but generally she spends more time with me than she does in her room. I have to make her go up there when she wants to listen to the music channels because she plays it too loud for my liking. The bad thing is we have surround sound in the living room & she likes that. She tried to get us to put the surround sound in her bedroom but we said NO WAY!

. . . but we said NO WAY! What a bunch of cruel, mean and hopelessly out of touch with reality mothers you are > Deaning your children the ability to waste their childhood the way they see fit. Don't you know that their peers will ostracize them ? Forcing your kids to turn to drinking & drugs to help deal with their limited self-esteem and confidence Well that's what society would want us to believe anyhow. Stick to your guns and when they ask ''But why, why can't I have . . . ". All you have to say is, First of all I'm your Mom/Dad and I'm in charge of you, and scientific studies show that I'm making the right decision. If you don't believe me, write me a 2-3 page essay showing me where I'm wrong. Second, because that's what I said and I make the rules, and without rules what do we have children . . . That's right = Chaos.

Just last night I reminded my son that I had to take mean lessons before I was allowed to be a mom. Maybe I'll add the If you don't believe me, write me a 2-3 page essay showing me where I'm wrong. As little as he likes to write, I'm sure that will stop his arguing in his tracks. Actually, he spends very little time in his room. He likes to be around me so he can talk at me non stop and make sure I'm aware he exists, or so it seems.
