Today was Shannon's IEP meeting at her new school. Unfortunately, Shannon is home sick & could not attend, but she made sure I took notes! LOL
The teachers that attended all had wonderful things to say about her personality, her enthusiasm, & her love of learning things that interest her. Her English teacher especially had a lot of great things to say about her contributions to his class discussions & her love of reading & writing. It helps that she adores this teacher & he's young & makes the class fun.
Math accommodations that they are giving her are perfect for her needs. She has access to the resource room & the special ed teacher says she even comes down on her own when she feels the need. They are really going to work on her organizational skills & make sure she's using her planner correctly & regularly.
Her biggest problems right now are:
*She's not handing in all her assignments
* When math gets too confusing she will push it aside & read a book instead of actively seeking help
* Her poor working memory keeps her from retaining math skills (and of course math builds on itself so this is a definite problem).
On the plus side:
* She is doing well on her projects
* She LOVES English class & when tested they found that she is the best reader in the school in speed, comprehension, & pronunciation.
*She knows her life goals & is working with the school counselor to research all her options for reaching those goals.
* All the teachers love her, say she's interesting, polite, enthusiastic.
On other thing I found out & that Shannon became excited about when I told her is that in the near future they will be offering paid positions for the HS kids to work after school mentoring the K-2nd graders. All of Shannon's teachers think this would be great for her & are going to make sure she gets offered a spot.
I'm relieved it went well!
