Last Friday I went to a school meeting together with my son's therapist to talk about my son's case.
After the school's psychologist, English and Spanish coordinators said their parts I can say that my level of stress diminished a lot. I have been really concerned about the fact that my son was starting first grade, so I guess I wasn't managing things properly at home with him; I think I was kind of transmitting my stress to my son; but my husband has been the person who has been playing a major role here, but I least I was able to decide to be more relaxed in regard to school; at the end of the day my husband is not home during the whole week.
The psychologist said that she was pretty concerned about the fact that my son is showing anxiety, he is biting his fingernails. Well, he has been doing this since long ; looking at his fingernails is not very pleasant... I suppose that as he feels less pressure at home this behavior will diminish. But I have heard that ADHD meds also cause anxiety in some, so...
In regard to his progress they all said he is going accordingly to his level. His grades (translated to your educational system) are like B's in general. Even though English is hard for him, he isn't doing badly. His handwriting which had become terrible is showing great improvement after I have been trying to make him conscious about it and his teacher has also been motivating him a lot to improve it. Today he brought home much better works in his notebooks and his teacher wrote motivating phrases and used stickers; so he is being more aware about this.
After all we said at that meeting they decided to set an appointment for my husband because I told them it would be useless if I transmitted the information they gave me; he wouldn't hear me. So, he went on Monday and they transmitted all the information to him. He seems to be more relaxed by the phone but I feel I still need to wait for the weekend and see.
I think all that happened goes for the positive. I feel my son has been a little more relaxed this week because I have relaxed myself. I know the school he is in is hard for him, but I am almost sure that the little changes we do at home will benefit him greatly.
