Thought I'd get a magnesium thread started.
Lots of info out there that kids with ADHD are magnesium deficient. I know in our situation that is the case!
Some links on magnesium:

To see if your child is magnesium deficient there is a simple "test" you can perform called the Cvostek. You tap the hollow of the cheek half way between the corner of the mouth and the earlobe. If the upper lip below the nose twitches or jumps it indicates the magnesium deficiency is likely present!
Almonds are a great source of magnesium as well as other foods (check out this link)

I would like to add that even if there is not an obvious magnesium deficiency that does not mean your ADHDer doesn't need more. My son does not test positive on the cheek test and his magnesium blood levels came back fine, BUT his naturopath put him on it anyway.

I just started my son on magnesium and he eats a lot of cheese and some ice cream. I also cook with milk quite often. He does not drink milk in any form very often.
Should I be giving him calcium supplements to go with the magnesium?
He is already taking several capsules at a time and is not happy about that. He won't take anything added to a drink or food, so it is capsules or nothing, so I am trying to limit what I give him to what he absolutely needs.

You have a couple of options. First, however, I just want to add that if you do supplement with calcium give it to him at a different time. Calcium and magnesium compete for absorption into the body and calcium wins out so you don't get the benefits of the mag.
One option you might consider is giving him almonds. Almonds are a natural source of magnesium AND are a great calcium source as well. We have had to restrict dairy and our Naturopathic Doc suggested almonds for calcium AND mag. Hope that helps! We have found magnesium VERY helpful for us! ;D
