Hi all! I made it to this board from the other and am finally posting.
One of my sons has ADD & is also very prone to anxiety. His teacher was telling me just today he seems extra anxious lately in school and has been weepy. He has been in a similar mood at home. Can't think of anything new that would've prompted this. Currently, he is taking a high EPA fish oil, but no other supplements. What would you recommend? He is 7 years old.
Thanks!

Have there been any changes in your son's life lately? Is he having problems in school that could be causing stress? What about bullies in school? He may not tell you he is being bullied but there could be one.
How long has he been on the fish oil? Is it straight fish oil or a blend with something else? Has his behavior changed since beginning the fish oil, even a couple of months after he started it? Its possible he may not need as high a dose. If you can't find any other reason for his anxiety, I would take him off for a few days and then start him back on 1/2 of what he is taking. If it is that, you will see improvement. If not, at least you will know.
You need to look at all those things. It wouldn't hurt also for him to see a therapist if he isn't at this time. My son started seeing a therapist and while he says they chat and play games but don't talk about anything serious, I have seen a postitive improvement in him.
Don't worry. We'll be here to go through this with you.

our son sounds like mine and its a sign of high norepinephrine. Its a stress hromone/neurotransmitter. Its on of your fight or flight hormones. Anxiety is usually a sign.
PhosphitidylSerine or what the just call PS is good because it makes the body more sensitive to cortisol. Cortisol is excreted during times of stress to keep the stress response in check and not get to far out of hand.
Plus you could have issues with high ammonia and sulphur in the body that is backed up due to the system not functioning correctly. High Protein diets for these type kids are not good. My son would only eat protien foods so it was an issue for us. Gut issues with bacterial over growth can also cause issues with ammonia in that bad bacteria gives off a by product of ammonia so get those gut issues under control also. Limit refined sugars that yeast and bad bacteria feed off of. MonoLaurin and Grapefruit Seed extract will help get rid of the bad stuff and use proboitics to replenish with the good bacteria for good gut flora.
Copper/Zinc balance is important becasue usually high norepinephrine is caused by too much copper and not enough zinc so supplemnet zinc and stay off the copper. L-Carnosine is said to help cooper/zinc balance also. Copper activates the enyme that converts dopamine to norepinephrine.
You can use products called CalmPRT and Travcor by NeuroScience that is made for anxiety. They work wonders. www.neurorelief.com

We put our son on an ADHD combo supplement called Learner's Edge. It was suggested as working very well for ADHD but it made our son very quiet and he would cry for no reason in school. I took him off and put him on flax seed oil and it made a big difference. The problem with the flax oil is it has to convert where fish oil is already in the form our bodies need.
He still tells me fish oil makes him feel fuzzy headed so I wonder if he isn't getting too high a dose of the omegas for his size. He is ADD inattentive rather than hyper so possibly he wouldn't need quite as much. I'm going to try him on a lower dose over the summer and see what happens.
My hubby is into natural supplements and he said for anxiety, to check out GABA , B-complex or l-tyrosine. I would ask at a health food store though as some of them may not be good for a child that young.
