For the people that use fish oil instead of other meds for adhd, how much does it help? Tiff takes Concerta, several weeks ago, I started all of us on fish oil tablets. If she is still taking the Concerta, should she also be taking the fish oil? Could that be a reason for her increased moodiness and not doing well in school? I was just sitting here thinking and oh my gosh, I thought could this be having an affect.

I have never heard of Fish oil causing moodiness. Shannons not on meds, but I know there are a lot of people who give both. As far as how much it helps, I think it helps a lot. Her concentration is markedly better with fish oil than it is without it. She never was hyper, so I don't personally know how it would affect that aspect. Her school work improved immensely with the fish oil because shes not so easily distracted & can concentrate better. I believe its helped improve her memory as well.

I just heard from someone the other day who said her husband can't take fish oil (omegas) because he gets very irritable. Her son takes it and it works for him but her husband definitely can't.
How long has Tiff been on it?
It may not hurt to take her off it and see what happens after a week. You could try her back on them after school lets out if you wanted to so you could be sure as to whether or not it was that.

Chase took it for probably 2-3 months, with concerta, and then with Ritalin LA. I didn't notice much improvement with his mood, but he did get really bad acid reflux.
Remember back when he kept vomiting in the middle of the night for no real reason? I think I posted on it a few times....it turned out that it was the fish oil. Apparently acid reflux shows up in children as unexplained vomiting. I stopped the fish oil, and the vomiting stopped, as did the acid.
He has now been off the fish oil for about 2 months, and he is no different off it, than he was on it.

My ds was on them for 4 mos and never noticed that his mood was any diffrent. Typically they don't cause moodyness. Are you using Pharmsutical grade? that is important! I would stop them for two weeks and see if you notice a diffrence! Concerta i belive also has a mood stabalizer in it ! ds was on this med before it mystreiously stopped working after 6 weeks! That was pre fish oil!
You can also have a hard time digesting the omegas so with food is the best! Takes the stress off the organs. I stoped the fish oils when ds was having trouble with the meds! I think they were helping mood regularity over all. I plan to start again in a month. I want to wait due to starting a new med and want to be sure that all is going well!
It also helps to keep a journal when you are changing things. it helps to notice the suttle changes over the longer period of time!
They say that the high EPA fish oil with a 7:1 EPA:DHA is the most bennificial for hyperness of childreen over 5 years old. Younger than that and they need more DHA. Omegas with primrose oil sometimes helps bost things if the omegas are not seeing a whole lot of gain, but still seeing some!
The omega 3s are sooooo good for everyone to supplement with! I went on them for a month that I was still nursing and my complection was much nicer!! Stoped taking them because they are not cheep and ds needs them more that me! I was also in a better more stable mood too! ( It could have been all in my head! LOL)

I will take her off and see what happens, if there is a change or not.

Did you or the teachers notice anything different before you put her on them? If so, it probably isn't the fish oil.
Fish oil helps my son's moods a lot but he doesn't like the way it makes him feel (or so he says but he may just not like taking it). I actually saw the best results with him when he took flax seed oil.
Its possible it isn't the omegas but something in the formula they use, possibly an ingredient in the capsules themselves. Someone told me once what it was that most people who have problems are reacting to but I can't remember what it is.

That is what I heard too charliegirl, but I am too afraid (and so is Chase) to try any other brands! I am leaving well enough alone...

If you wanted to try flax oil, that is totally different from the fish as far as how its metabolized but its the same results in the end.
You can also get flax seed and grind it and put it in foods. It doesn't hold up well in cooking but it has a slightly nutty flavor and people add it to all sorts of cold foods and drinks. You do have to grind it though or the seeds will pass through undigested.

Unfortunately fish oil can cause moodiness...in fact anything can if the person is at all sensetive to any of the components. This includes fillers and binders. That also means that one of the otehr brands might not be so bad....but I wouldnt want to go around experimenting unless I had seen a pronounced change. peace, marge www.net-haven.net
