cynthiatweedleDue to the fact that neither the Omegas nor the Pediactive were helping enough to save my granddaughter from failing third grade, her Mom made the tough decision to go ahead with medication.
As it happened, the doctor prescribed Concerta 18 mg, which appears to be working fine. The second day she complained of dizziness and a stomach ache which did not last long and didn't repeat on the third day. The first and second day she experienced some loss of appetite but now is eating pretty good. All my fears about a reaction are about gone.
I tested her hand writing and it is a little better than normal. Her hyperactivity is less, she isn't talking very rapidly or jumping up and down so fast. Still a little more active than the average, but a noticeable difference from the loud talking and squeals we usually hear.
It's lasting about 11 and 1/2 hours. So it should last long enough to get her through the homework period which has been so tough for her.
I am watching today to see if she is getting along better with her sister in cleaning up their room. Usually the conflicts are enough to make me want to pull my hair out.
The doctor says she can be off on weekends and the summer if we want to. I expect he will have to go up on the dosage some to see enough difference in her school work so that she will be out of trouble.
I had a lot of mixed feelings about putting her on meds, it was not my first choice for sure. But on top of her being in the failing range at school, her self esteem was suffering. What does she think? She is delighted to have some help and takes the med eagerly.
Overall my feelings are
By the way, I will continue giving her the omegas in hopes that at some point they will kick in.
Linda Paul started taking concerta in middle school right through his sophmore year. He is now a senior and has been med free ever since.
It did effect his appetite but I made sure he ate well in the mornings and when the meds wore off...the kid was a eating machine!! #00blushkiss#
The best thing I liked about it was there were no melt downs when the meds wore off! #44lovelovejoyjoy#
annemConcerta has been a wonderful med for my 17 year old Sam ... although these days he needs very little of it ...
Prior to concerta Sam was on the three times a day Ritalin and it was frankly a "disaster" !! ... Looking back to our pre-concerta days .... Yes in agreement with the article he HATED lining up for the nurse at break time and OFTEN didn't bother to do so ... which often created tension in the classroom especially as his meds were "wearing off" ...
But .... Concerta was a "different" ballgame
.... and like Linda ... I have never seen a "rebound" from concerta (unlike straight ritalin!) ... it has always been a much smoother effect and from my experience can be stopped with no ill-effects .....
As for the side-effects of Concerta .... Sam definitely had a loss of appetite ... and even on the 2-3 days a week he still take it he says he needs to eat a good breakfast to prevent a stomach ache ... as long as he gets a good breakfast within around 30 minutes of taking the concerta tablet then he is fine ... no stomach ache .... and the loss of appetite is irrelevant because he was fed before the effects took place!! ...
I do find though that on his "concerta days" he is not ready for dinner until around 8.00 p.m. .... its at about that time that his appetite returns with AVENGEANCE!!
