Does anyone have experience with Daytrana? My son has tried so many other stimulants already and hates taking his meds. Also has lost a couple pounds on Adderall XR so Dr. suggest trying the patch. I am beginning to lose hope in all of this because he is 9 and is very thin (54lbs). having no appetite at the end of the day makes him very irritable and emotional when he comes home and still rushes through his homework because he is afraid he won't have enough time to play. He also has some LD issues which makes it more difficult for him. Does the patch work? Help \ rdmom

There is up's and downs of the patch. My daughter 8yrs old has been on the patch 3 or 4 mos. It works good for her, I just hate that it has to be put on about 2hrs before it takes effect. So every morning I have to wake up at 5Am and I just put it on her and let her sleep then when she gets up at 6:30 am it's starting to work(still a little fussy) and by 7 when she is off to school it's working in full effect. also the area where the patch is put will have to be scrubbed really hard to get the sticky stuff off. It leaves a red square on her leg, and from advise ask for some cream to apply after the patch is removed and the area cleaned, if not it will be irritated and dry skin.
enough of the bad side of it.....LOL...the good side is it really does work. when she is on it she wants to write storys, read books and actually plays with one thing, not digging into everything and always looking for something like when she doesn't have it on. I have had a good experience on it and have went through so many other meds before this and now that I'm thinking about it this is the longest she has been on one single med.
If you have any specific questions about it...just ask, I will check back often.

Sweet, My Mom has a patch for pain ( a God-sent) and I just use mineral oil to get the residue off. Any oil will work like a charm but you just have to make sure the patch isn't put on the oily part. Luckily, my Mom hasn't had a rash or anything associated with the patch.
I'm not sure what your doc recommends for placement but I just go counter clock wise. One day on the right shoulder, next day on the right chest-upper shoulder area, etc..

My son tried the patch last summer and really liked it after we got the dosage right. Like sweetnsilly said the downside is waiting for it to kick in. After a few weeks his skin became quite sensitive to it (red welt) which took five or six days to go away even with ointment.

My 10 year old just started the patch. In order to avoid morning problems, we give a small focalin pill right away in the morning. You could also use ritalin 5mg. It is not recommended with the patch but we had to do something to get him to school. By the way, when we used focalin his appetite was much improved. The problem is my son has an unusual metabolism and was requiring oral medication frequently and at high doses. So we are trying the patch. Ritalin is converted to focalin in the body (the way I understand it). The big drawback to Focalin is expense! The short acting one isn't too bad but the extended tab cost us over 150.00/month after insurancw paid it's share! still .....if you your desperate as many parents are with ADHD, it is worth checking out. As for eating, supper time at our house is 800pm for my son when the medication wears off. Also get a blender and learn to mix smoothes. Also if you plant them in front of the TV they may eat or with other children or "race" them to see who can finish there milk first. I know it is all bad habits but creativity is required. I know you will come up with something that works. You might want to consider an ADHD camp or program or contact CHADD if not already a member. Take care JennieLynn

A benefit we have noticed (when comparing Daytrana to other ADHD meds) is that with the patch, our son is not an emotional wreck when the med wears off. It seems to wear off so gradually that we end up with a happier child.

P.S. Our kitchen doesn't close down until the last flutter of an eye and he's fast asleep - trying to make up for lost feeding time during the day.

Hello, everyone. My son, Nathan, age 10 was recently diagnosed with ADHD and was prescribed Daytrana. I have been the mistake of searching the Internet to research the various drugs given to children with ADHD because I have found out there are too many side effects associated with the drugs. One of the main concern is the growth suppression in children. Have any of you experienced this with your child? Has your child experienced extreme weight loss? Please let me know. Thank you - Tami
