Hi,
Has anyone given Vyvanse a try? I'm thinking about requesting my son's physician if she would provide him with a trial prescription. Shire offers a voucher for 30 days free. It would be a good time to see about it now, before school starts.

I am also curious about any experiences. I fact, I was about to post asking about it.

I haven't tried it but I have read posts on other sites from people who have. So far they have all been positive.
One mother posted that her son did well on it but it only lasted about 6 hours so they had to give a low dose of short acting ritalin to compensate. It does seem to last the full time for most people as far as I can tell, and the boy was an exception.

Thanks, Charliegirl, for your information.
Mary2, I bet we'll all hear more soon.
I'm planning to call the physician tomorrow a.m.
I'll report back.

I spoke with our physician today and we won't be trying the Vyvanse.
My son uses a low dosage of meds (currently Focalin) because a little mg goes a long way for him. Too much mg on any ADHD med and he becomes "zombie-like" and side effects come into play, such as low appetite and difficulty sleeping.
The doctor said the lowest dose of Vynanse would be too high for my son. She further said this med is very similar to Adderall (we've never tried Adderall, so personally I don't know).
Also, she stated the low appetite problem would be more evident for him if he went on the Vyvanse.
She began to discuss that Vyvanse should be a good choice for someone that needed a longer acting formula and I think she mentioned something about more even benefits throughout the day.
The bottom line for us, though, is that it is too much med.

I haven't spoken to the doctor but I think maybe this won't be a good choice for him since he already has serious appetite issues. Anyway, I will ask the doctor on our next visit.
Thanks for the information squirrelgirl.

We got the 30day free trial for vyvanse and my daughter will start Saturday. But now I am scared because adderal made my daughter very angry. But hopefully it will be a diff chemical make up and it won't be that way on vyvanse. Also a month supply for this med is 150.00 and it's a new med I am hoping by the time the month is over that I insurance will pay for it. as of right now they are not. Thank goodness for the trial. I stopped the daytrana patch because we were on the lowest mg they had and it was too much all the sudden...making her zombie and I cut it in half and it wasn't enough. It worked so good for months, I don't know why the change. Now I am going to look up why vyvanse is like adderal.

My son, Sam, age 10 started on vyvanse on aug 10th. it is amazing for us!! Everything else played havoc on his digestive system but this vyvanse is great. It lasts about 12 hours so it gets us through dinner and bath time, too!!
