I hope this isn't a stupid question but I'm wondering. Are there different "strength" medications that are used for ADHD? Like are some more powerful than others? Are there ones that are considered stronger or does it just depend on the person who is taking it and how they react to the medication?

They have different dosage strengths. If there are strong side effects or you don't see much improvement the dr can adjust the dosage to see if that works.

yes there are different doses as cg said and I think there are different mixtures of meds in some pills!
It is not a stupid question at all! Most docs start at the lowest dose they think will work and then titrate up to a dose that works with the least amount of side effects if there will be any. I know the concerta I take comes in 18, 27, 36 mg pills. I take 2 36 mg pills a day in the morning. One dose of a certain type is not neccesarily equivalent to the same dose of another type.

KK...I think I know what you were trying to ask. Although there are different dosages, to me, I think some meds ARE stronger than others, even at the same dosage. For example, Ritalin never worked well for Josh, just didn't do the job with his hyperactvity. But when he took the same dosage of Concerta, it worked much better. The dosage was the same, the result was different. It really just depends on the individual and how they tolerate the med.
I hope this helps a little. Finding the right med can be challenging, but you eventually get there through trial and error.

I am just thinking that I will be needing someting along the lines of a horse tranquilizer for Sean and if there was something that is "stronger" I am desperate enough to request it. His hyperactivity is beyond anything I have ever experienced. My friend took her son to be evaluated for ADHD, I forget by who since he's now 16, and they told her he was by far one of the most hyperactive children they had ever seen. "In the top 10" were their exact words. And yes, he was a very active, talkative, kid but compared to Sean he was comatose.

From my experience, no there is not one med stronger than another. They are all VERY different. Each person reacts differently to each one at each dose. So for you one medication may seem "strong", but for me it may not do anything. But, for example, Adderall is not "stronger" than Ritalin. That is talking stimulants.
