What are some tips for self-treatment of adult ADD/ADHD?
The keys to managing and treating a diffuse condition such as ADD / ADHD are:
education,
a strong support system,
resources for handling mood changes, and
external structure.
The following list was inspired by Adult ADHD: 50 Tips on Management:
Educate yourself about ADHD – Read books on ADHD, talk with professionals, talk with other adults who have ADHD. You'll not only feel less alone, you'll have more information to create your own unique treatment plan.
Educate others – Your family, friends, work associates, and others with whom you interact on a regular basis need to understand ADHD in order to help and support you.
Encourage others to encourage you! – Adults with ADD / ADHD need a lot of encouragement, both to overcome years of low self-esteem and to make additional progress.
Recognize the source of ADD – ADHD is not a character flaw or a weakness of will! Rather, it is a neurobiological condition that may be genetically transmitted or may be the result of conditions before or at birth or very early in life.
Allow yourself recreational downtime – We all need to let go. People with ADD / ADHD need more downtime than average. Whether this means blasting loud music, playing ball with your dog for hours, or going to a party, give yourself permission to have fun, as long as it's safe and not detrimental in any way.
Rest and recharge – By the same token, take time to recharge your batteries, which are often in overdrive. Take a nap, meditate, go for a nature walk – whatever is calming and nurturing for you.
Socialize – Friends and fun are paramount for someone with ADHD. Schedule regular activities with people you like, join groups you enjoy, and seek social training in getting along well with others.
Exercise – Work out! Exercising vigorously and regularly is one of the best treatments for ADHD. It helps work off excess energy and aggression in a positive way, reduces mental "noise," stimulates your hormonal and neurochemical systems in a therapeutic way, and soothes and calms the body. Choose a form of exercise you love so you'll stick with it for the long term.
