A few weeks ago when I asked the psychiatist about a DX she told me that she really couldn't give us one at that point other than to say that the ADHD is obvious and there is definitely "something else" going on. When I scheduled the EKG appt. they told me the referral had to have a DX on it or they wouldn't do it. I told the psych. this and yesterday I picked it up and it had 2 diagnostic codes on it which of course I googled as soon as I got home.(whatever did we do before the internet?) ADHD combined type and Bipolar moderate. No surprise to me-I knew this months ago. Now I have 2 questions maybe someone could help me with. First is this an official diagnoses or is there like a day where she will sit me down and say "your kid is bipolar"? Second-do I tell the teacher, counselor, etc. at our next meeting?

I wouldn't tell the teacher or counciler just yet. You should wait for the Dr to sit you down and set a treatment plan in place. That way you have a plan with your Dr. on what is the most ideal situation for Sean. You don't want to run back and forth to the school 3 or 4 times with new info (especially if they are not very helpful already) When they put him on meds and get him into some type of therapy. That would be when I would go to the school. One more thing just because they right it on a script does not mean that it is in thier file, until they get conclusive results back. Most of the time there is a notation but it's only to cover thier butt and doesn't mean that they will back the diagnosis until they get thier results. It's basicly a big circle to protect them. I have ridden around a couple times with the asthma and the food allergies and the ADHD

Since she hasn't given you a dx yet, I would assume she entered what she thinks it will be so you can have the ekg done, but it isn't definite even in her mind. I definitely wouldn't want to tell the school yet. She will tell you what she believes it is when she is confident that it is what she suspects.
Well, now you know that you are on the right track. Whether it turns out that he is bp or not, you were right in suspecting the possibility since the psych also is leaning that way. Good job!

I would not tell the school. It sounds like she is not sure yet. I think I have read that some doctors do not diagnose BP until a certain age because it really isn't clear. You still need a report from a doctor stating that he has ADHD that is interfering with his ability to learn so you can hand it to the school to force them to evaluate for SE services. Have you found an advocate?
