Keep looking for a neuro psych. Ask that psych you went to for a referral. Maybe if you have a referral your insurance will make an exception.
I'm so glad Sean has you.

Thanks for saying that CG because right now I feel like for all my effort I have done nothing for this child. All I want are some answers so that we can work on a solution. Damage has already been done to his self-esteem and confidence. I just want him to be able to function and to be in a school environment that is not so frustrating and upsetting to him. I felt like if we got a DX we would have more leverage against the school. I feel like I have been beating my head against a brick wall. I cannot get back the past 2 years of school which have been nothing but miserable for him. I cannot allow him to have another 2 years like this.

Oh, gosh, I'm so sorry, KK. It took me years to find a good psychiatrist for my son, and I live in a large city. How far are you from a major city? You're on the East Coast, right? If so, how far are you from Philadelphia? I've heard very good things about Children's Hospital there. Neuropsychs at children's hospitals are suppose to be the best for dxing autism.

just a fyi, if you are able to get to Phila, another well-respected developmental pediatrician whose specialty is autism/Aspberger is Dr. Beth Parish at St. Christopher's Hospital. Excellent reputation. She will put all your questions to rest. She ruled out Autism for my son because his previous school kept saying he had Aspberger's. I was relieved in that I did not see what they were saying. I saw more of an emotional problem. I found her to be very objective and gave me many concrete recommendations to assist my son, not just get your son therapy, but provided names of places, names of people and phone numbers, even places which charged on sliding scale since she recommended a psychoeducation evaluation. She even put in her report that the school absolutely conduct the proper testing on Gage that he deserves. I felt very satisfied. If I could hit the lotto, I would pay for your way here just to see her.

Lillian and Carol-I am very close to Philadelphia, just about 10 minutes to the bridge. How would I go about getting an appointment? Would I just call the main number to the hospital?

KK, I would go with Carol's suggestion. Anytime, you can find someone who specializes in dxing Autism, that's who you want to see. I'd call the hospital Carol recommended first, and if that doesn't work out, then call Children's Hospital. Yes, you call and make an appointment. You probably will be asked to fill out forms before they will make the appointment, though. Doctors working out of hospitals often have forms for you to fill out and to give the school before coming in. Unlike the (ahem) you just saw, these doctors WANT background information!

I just went to my insurance website and searched for a neuropsych and guess whose name is on it? Beth Parrish. Thank you so much Carol for that information. I will not yet take this as good news because with my luck she moved to Hawaii or something. I am now going to call my stupid ins. co. to see if this info is still correct. So please keep your fingers crossed and say a little prayer for me as I get on my phone and start this process again. There are also 7 other neuropsychs on the list in my area if my first choice does not work out.

make sure you ask the insurance company how the referral works and if you need some kind of preapproval before you do it. BUT, a good doc office will help you walk through the process too. I am sorry you had a bad visit with the other one!
You all know sean the best, so stick to it, I am sure it will pay off in the end.

Eveything was ok with the insurance. I called and they are going to send me paperwork to fill out and then when I return that they will put him on the waiting list...which is 15 months long. Do I wait or should I call another? I feel like I need step by step instructions now since I always seem to make bad choices. What what you do?

KK, I know when i went through all of that with Christian, I called Children's Hospital in Boston, and though they could not take him on as a patient, but they did do a emergency evaluation and then sent me on my way with the correct diagonisis and a list of people who could help me, and see him ASAP...I would call the hospitals, ask them to send you the paper work, ask to speak to a nurse, or on call physch, explain the situation you are in, and tell them, you understand the waiting list and are willing to take their suggestions on where he can go to be seen weekly or monthly, but could you get him in on a emergency evaluation and a correct diagonsis so that you can move on, and see if they can or will do it...also, call the peditrician, and have him or her also call over usually when the pedi recommends it, you can get in a lot quicker. Good luck, and so sorry to hear about the appt. you have been waiting for...it is a long hard road, but hopefully you will have answers soon....
