Hi, am interested to know if there are any others who have been dx as ADHD-C (ADHD combined) with comorbid Bipolar I or II?
I had problems with stimulants and now with Seroquel for the bipolar II (in my case) and now added dexamphetamine I am a very happy camper. Nope not the lift that dexamphetamine may or may not give, but most symptoms are now in order.
A like combination is working well with adult son, who was always complaining about "days of being on his rags" (translated to mean depresseed). He is going well with again Seroguel and Ritalin.
Happy Days, it sure took a long time to diagnose us both correctly. Well find the right meds.

I think adult ADHD can come with comorbid stuff with it, but it ends up being a spiderweb to untangle at times. I see an ADHD physcologist now and am adult ADHD. I am currently working with him now on the other issues he suspects are going on, but I think that some of the comorbid stuff can fall into so many categories, I personally get confused and sometimes I think I am resistant in a way to getting more "labels". Just a personal hang up I have! I am working on some issues right now and trying to get through them so that I can eliminate some stuff and bipolar sometimes is a word that pops up, I am just super resistant to taking a mood stabilizer at this time to try it out!
I am glad to hear someone say it is working out for them to deal with the ADHD and comorbid stuff! Do you have any side effects from the meds that are negative?
I dunno, I think CG once told me to not get hung up on the labels (correct me if I am wrong there CG?). The advice was try to be open minded about it and try some stuff out since I sort of trust this pyhsc a little and he has been helpful and on the money so far!

My 7 year old son has been diagnosed with ADHD and Bipolar amongst other things yet to be determined. At first he was put on Depakote and Adderall but they did nothing. He is currently taking Abilify and has been on it for about a month. About 2 weeks ago his psych. added Trileptal. We have seen fantastic results, especially in school. I am glad you found something that works well for you.

All the labels are really for is to help identify the areas you need help with. They are already there so the only difference they make is that you now know what specifically to target which makes it easier to deal with positively. I'm glad things are working out for you now JennyWren!

Yeap CharlieGirl (sorry don't remeber your name fully). It took some three years! And with the imput of yet another psychiarist to get the diagnosis of Bipolar II.
Interestingly enough, there is some talk about that those with ADHD-C with some Bipolar symptoms could be yet another subtype of ADHD. When will it all end?
I guess the thing is in this day and age, with neuroimaging(sp) and other tools such a gene reserach it is becomming increasingly difficult for those compiling the list of symptoms of any particular "mental" disorder for the DSM. There are now many more things to take into consideration. Mind you, I would hope that this would lead to the various symptoms lists being more accurate/more easily interrupted.
I think at some time ADHD was regarded as a behavioural problem, but now is regarded and much more likely as a problem with the executive functions.
I agree with the comments re giving disorders a name. I would imagine that there are very few individuals who fit exactly the particular list of symptoms for a particular disorder. However, it does help, well me it does (as I am one who goes into the disorder completely and thoroughly - finally managed to get a B.Sc at the age of 43 and this helps) and I can then (well I hope) understand what is going on with me.
My feelings in regard to myself now? Well some ADHD-C with some Bipolar II.
It has taken me a couple of years to get what I will call a good grasp on ADHD. Professor Barkely's book ADHD Adults - The Science of it, really helped to put the picture into perspective for me.
This was coupled with an article in The School Psychologist M magazine. APA Division 18 School Psychology. Vol 61. No 1
Regards to all reading,

Have you seen the work Daniel Amen is doing with ADHD? He has been into the neuroimaging for years now. I think there are still a lot of reservations out there about him but its interesting to see what he is doing. www.brainplace.com/

I get an email newsletter from the brainplace all the time, I think some of Amen's work is interesting and on the money! Reading some of his stuff is what made me want to take fish oil, which I do now - I guess it helps! Can't hurt anyway.
