My 6 year old just started taking this today. I'm just curious to hear from anyone else that's on it or has a child on it.

ct...this is the only med we haven't tried. I really don't know many people that have tried this one, but that is because its fairly new. I do know some of the ladies on this board did attend a roundtable session about this medication. I'm sure some will chime in and give you some imput. I want to bump this up to see if you can get any other responses. How did your first day go?

Hi! I believe it was Misty that told me a little about it (PLEASE forgive me if I got the wrong name-lol). The 1st day went nto too bad. We did notice some changes last night but aren't sure how to take them. It seemed to make her OVERLY compulsive and weepy but today is a little better. She didn't have school yesterday but her teacher called me this afternoon and said that she definately seemed less IMPULSIVE, but was still distracted at times and seemed compulsive about her shirt sleeves.

How did it go today? I think that is one of the meds that they start you out with a lower dose and titrate up until you reach the optimal dose so it may just be that she hasn't reached the right dose yet.

It was a pretty good day. She seemed very interested in wanting to color whenever she could but at one point wanted to watch a movie. Well, about 5 minutes into it she got up again and went in to color. Her teacher said she had a great day-even calmer than yesterday but seemed distracted during art. Once she got home she was back to the coloring, and wasn't too happy when I told her it was time to end the coloring and either play outside (it was nice here in CT today=61!) or she could watch the rest of the movie she started this morning. She went outside but returned 10 minutes later, asking to color again, saying she didn't want to play outside. It wasn't until I told her that she was done coloring for the day, that she got upset and tried to get me to change my mind for over 15 minutes. She ended up going outside again once she realized that some of the neighborhood kids were out. She went to bed at 9 and as of 15 minutes ago, is still awake unfortunately, despite me giving her some Benadryl for her allergies at 8. I'm hoping she's done for the night and will sleep through like last night.
Do the docs ever give kids anything to help w/sleep if they are having issues due to the meds? She's NEVER really had any problems until she started the meds Monday. Is it somethign I should talk to her ped about tomorrow or wait it out?

A lot of people swear by melatonin to help their kids sleep when they are taking the meds. It works well for my son who is unmedicated. He gets very drowsy shortly after taking it but they need a good night's sleep, 7 to 8 hrs at least, when they do take it or they are drowsy still in the morning.

I'm going to have to ask her pediatrician about that. She was up until 11:30 and got up 5 times between 10:30 and 11:30!!!!!! Luckily she didn't wake her brother or I would've been even MORE furious than I was. I know I shouldn't get mad at her but it was so hard when she'd get up for stupid stuff. We'd put her to bed even earlier than 9, but we have to wait until her brother is asleep 1st (15mo).

My daughter has always had sleep issues. Her psych put her on clonodine. she took that for awhile & it worked but I was uncomfortable giving a child a med that is in actuality a blood pressure med for adults...plus she needed more & more the longer she was on it & you cannot suddenly stop taking it. So I researched melatonin & weaned Shannon off the clonodine & started the melatonin. It worked wonders. Eventually I think she outgrew the sleep difficulties because she rarely needs a melatonin now. She only asks for one every so often, but in the beginning she would easily be up until after midnight & the lack of sleep was making her ADD symptoms much much worse. One thing--pediatricians get no kick back from natural supplements so very rarely will they approve or recommend something like melatonin. I researched it online & started her on it without a doctors approval.

I'm actually going to bring that up with my husband later-maybe we'll try her on it soon. Her pediatricians are going to change her to Concerta starting tomorrow. I know the sleep issues will happen on any med but he said that the OCD-ish type symptoms she's been exhibiting should NOT occur. I am leaving in a few minutes to go pick up the script-wish us luck!!!!!
