My son finished school yesterday. His neuroped suggested to stop the med to let him gain some weight since like many of you know, the Concerta is basically an appetite suppressant for my son; it has helped tremendously for his school work, but it can also be compared to a dieting pill for him; well, his body just reacts this way; I know this is not everybody else problem with Concerta. The fact is that I am a little scared about possible reactions as he stops it all of a sudden after being on it for about two continuous years.
Does somebody have any experience on this?
My son will finish his year therapies at the end of this month. I am thinking whether to keep him on Concerta up to that time; or just stop it right now.
The doc told me that he is supposed to resume taking the med a week before class starts and at a lower dose only for that first week.

maybe try whatever you and the doctor talked about, the good thing about concerta is if it is not working to stop, you can go right back on it again. If you need to, ask them for the short acting ritalin for those times that he may really be hyped up and need it in a given situation. You might notice him being a little more ADHD for a time, but I think it will be OK if you can stand it?

Mary, we had the same reaction to Concerta too...Josh was skinny, skinny, when he was on it. But, the good news was that we always took him off it for summer and we never had a problem with it. Concerta is a type of drug that is out of Marcel's systems by the end of the day anyway. You may have a couple of days of rebound, but we always got through it within a week, as Josh's body adjusted. If you can handle behavior issues without the Concerta, go for it. I know all kids are different, but I don't see Marcel having too much of a problem. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

mary, you know that Chase reacted the same way to the concerta. He did noy have any problems when we took him off for the summer, but he does not have the hyperactivity.

Thanks for your ideas. I like lcdc1's about having some Ritalin at hand in case there's a situation in which he should have more control. However, I am still not sure whether to stop tomorrow or wait until he finishes his therapies at the end of this month. I will tell you how it goes.

ask his therapy person about that question, but my two cents is it is hard for me to learn without meds in my system, if he is learning coping skills or something, just think about it. You will come up with the right answers, you have so far!

You will come up with the right answers, you have so far! I suppose that the therapist will suggest to wait till the end of the month; anyways, I will ask her on Tuesday when he has therapy with her, and will still keep him on the med until I decide with her what I will do. About the hyper thing?? yes, I am a bit scared. These days things around here aren't too good and Marcel has been irritated and impulsive in certain occasions; however, all that has a reason. If it didn't have a reason I would certainly be very concerned.

We take a break from meds during the summer because Spencer needs to add weight. We have never been instructed by the doctor to wean him off. We just stop. I've also kept him off meds on all weekends and holidays to give his appetite a boost. The hyperactivity is not easy to deal with. DS has been a motor mouth, too. Talk, talk, noise, noise, talk, noise, talk. His body is in constant motion. However, I think we've already put a few pounds on him this summer, so that's good.

LOL...your talk, talk, talk, noise, noise cracked me up although I know it can drive one crazy. (my niece is like that). Sort of like this.... ROTFL But that isn't why I posted....I was just thinking it really is surprising they gain any weight at all since they are constantly in motion.

Hi mary2, Did you decide to stop the medication? I was just curious how your appointment went.
Silly jj! LOL! You're totally right. How can they possibly gain a pound? Calories burned must be way more than calories taken in.
