Things I've learned from my first 2 weeks of homeschooling....
1. Josh is sooooo much more relaxed. It's amazing to see. His anxiety level has dropped so much its unreal. Ever since we said we were going to take on homeschooling, he's been a different kid. Blows me away.
2. My Bug can be much more independant than ever I thought. After years of him begging me to help him with the easiest of schoolwork, he all of a sudden wants to do everything solo. He gaining some much needed confidence and its so nice to see.
3. He is soooooo ADHD. Ok, I've known this for a long time, but now that I'm actually his teacher, I soooooooo get it. He is distracted by everything. Even with the TV off, no radio, no sounds at all except the humming of the fridge, he'll hear a bird outside and say, "Mom, did you hear that bird"? Today he cracked me up. We're sitting all comfy cozy on the couch learning about Caesar and the Roman Empire. (Ok, I know, boring. But I made it really animated and fun.) Anyway, I'm in the middle of explaining the Roman Empire and he interupts me. I'm like "What?" and he says, "Hey mom, remember when we were watching Alien and that alien popped out of that guys stomache?" I'm like, where the heck did that come from? I fell off the couch laughing. Too funny.
4. No matter what you do, you can not, I repeat, you can not make Math fun. Even if you sing and dance the math problems out, you can't make it interesting. He still hates math and I don't like teaching it. I don't know how math teachers do it.
5. Even though I know this was the best decision for us right now, I know I'll be insane by Winter. I can't wait for the local homeschooling group to start, cuz Mama needs to talk to someone else besides a 12 year old all day! I love him, but geez this is going to be a long year.
So, this is the beginning of our adventure. So far, so good. He's so excited about school again. You just don't know what that means to me. He gets up every morning ready to go AND has a good attitude. If you ask him, his favorite part of homeschooling is that he can work in his PJ's and can have snacks anytime he wants. (That's what he told his cousins at a family function this weekend). Hey, what more can you ask for?
