My 10 yo son has autism and ADHD. He was on Metadate 40 mg, which wasn't working too well. He was switched back to Focalin CR 20 mg. His dad called me and said there was a big difference and it lasted about 7 hrs. So, if he takes his meds at 6am, they will wear off by the time lunch comes around 1pm. I have heard other moms who had said their child had a second dose around lunch time to get them thru the rest of the school and homework time.
SO, my question is how docs prescribe this and what is the usual dosage. Ive heard the second dose would not be extended release like the first morning dose.

Welcome to our board jdoxakis!
Have you spoken to your doctor about it? I am sure that he/she could counsel you on what you would be able to give him.
I am glad that you have found a med that seems to do the trick!
I would suggest you tell the doctor what you told us, and the doctor can prescribe the meds accordingly.

Welcome jdoxakis!
I agree with Puzzled. Your dr is the only one who can really determine what is best for your son. They do normally give a short acting stimulant for the second dose so you probably can safely assume that is what he will give your son.
Let us know what he says and how your son does on it. I hope it will get him through the day at school and for homework.

I agree with the others that this is an issue you need to talk to your doctor about. This is actually quite common with some kids. I'm sure your doc can help you out so you can come to a better solution. In the mean time, is there anyway your son can take his meds any later than 6:00 am? Maybe they could be administered at school instead of at home. Just a thought. Welcome to our group, jdoxakis! We're so happy that you've found us. We look forward to getting to know you and your son.
