I think my 5 year old has ADHD, i have been noticing the past 1 1/2 years he seems to be more and more hyper and I really don't want another child on medacine but he is in kindergarden and has not done any of the work that they do together in class, he talks nonstop and just gets up when the teacher is teaching. I don't know what to do. If I don't do anything he is going to fail kindergarden. Cortni's meds cost me $80 a month and i can't afford double that. and just don't want 2 of my kids to be ADHd and on meds, I've tried to take cort off and did not want to put her back on but i couldn't survive and she would fail in school and stay in trouble.

Awww, Sweet. I'm sorry you are seeing the signs he may be ADHD. I really don't know what to tell you - I'm drawing a blank here. I know someone else will have good advise. My brain just isn't working today but I did want to acknowledge your post.

Sweet, Have you tried getting free or reduced cost meds either from the manufacturer or through one of the programs that offer them? I don't know just how they all work but even if you have insurance they may take the out of pocket cost of the meds into consideration. It won't hurt to try.
I'm sorry your son is showing symptoms now. I guess its best to find out now and start the interventions before he is older and way behind.

That is reduced cost meds, I have to pay $50 for name brand drugs, if they are expensive and vyvance and any adhd med is expensive and I don't think they have genaric. this is my co-pay Vyvanse 50.00 respridol 21.42 clonadine 1.61=73.03
insurance pays vyvanse 86.96 respridol 39.00 clonadine14.40=140.36
So I am getting it alot cheaper so can't complain there but it sucks to have to spend 73.00 a month on meds.
I am going to look into cheaper adhd meds to try ryan my 5yr old on. I know that when Cort was 4 and they started her on meds the very first one was ritalin and I just did not like it, i had heard so many side effects, just the name scares me. but it wore off so quick she had to take it in the morning and at noon.

Sweet, tell your kid's Dr. that you are having trouble paying for the meds. I know Bill's Dr. gave me forms directly for the company that makes the meds his insurance didn't cover. All the major med companies have programs that can get you the meds for free if you can't afford them. You have to fill the forms out every month, but it's worth it if you qualify. in the meantime:

Have you ever applied for SSI for the kids? If so I do know that with SSI you get automatic medicaid at least where I live. My girl did not qualify due to our income level. I wish I can help you more and the reduced thing does not sound like such a deal. Can your pediatrician or psychologist offer samples if they have any to help out?

As far as I know, you cannot get samples of the stim meds from the dr....I did get a coupon for a fee month of concerta from the doc, but that was a one time deal.

My kids have been on medicaid in the past, the income level is pretty good for 6 people in the home but we do not qualify because our income has exceeded and they count overtime and all that. They can look at our income tax and divide it by 12months. My hubby is the only one who works in the family and makes 28 and hour thats 4480 a month, but he gets alot of overtime, a family of 6 can make 4,734 a month and get free medical. But we do not qualify. If i say we split then I could get it but they require the father to keep insurance on his kids, so it's not much difference. and a chance to go to jail for fraud so I won't even think about going that wayt.

Hey sweet, another thing I have done in the past is ask the pharmacist to just sell me half the prescription & then I went back later in the month & picked up the rest when I had more cash. That is a nice thing to be able to do if you are short on funds at the moment.

Sweets...have you checked out Walmart, Sam's Club, or Costo? My sister-in-law just got divorced and has no insurance and she is getting her perscriptions for $4.00 a piece. I know its not for all types of drugs, but it might be worth checking out.
I feel for you. The cost of perscriptions is out of this world. I pray you can work something out.
