So...I'm super excited and trying not to be at the same time.
Ok, I'm going to tell you all the whole story. My son is Type I Diabetic. So it's a challenge to keep his sugars stable. We have to balance his food with his insulin. And with a growing boy, that's not easy! So Sunday night we go out to dinner. A diabetic nightmare, really, but we don't let it stop us. So after a nice fatty, carb-y dinner followed by a high sugar icecream sundae, we headed home. I checked his sugar before bed and it was 174, so I thought I did good at dinner.
Well, over night, the insulin wore off, and the food kept working so his sugars started to creep up. He woke up Monday morning 410! (very high by the way) Well, one of the things the body does when sugars is that high, is flush. It demands water and it flushes as much water (bringing sugar with it) out of the body. Which causes dehydration.
Well, the med my son is taking for bipolar is lithium. Lithium comes with a very big risk. If lithium levels are too high, it becomes toxic. Lithium levels are between .6 and 1.2 in order to be therapeutic. Last time we checked, my son's was around .25 We did an increase about 6 days ago, so it may have gone up, but I'm guessing not quite to .6 BUT, if you become dehyrdated, the levels can increase. Which is a problem if you are around 1.2 because over 1.2 is toxic.
So...I'm thinking my son's dose is not quite .6, but because of the high sugar Sunday night, and the dehyrdation, his levels were bumped up into at least .6 And the reason I think this...
My son was different Monday morning. He was singing, and helping, and laughing, and not over reacting. I reminded him of a few things and he just did it without freaking out. My husband sent me messages all morning with things like "Who is this kid?" "This is so less stressful." "What ever this is, I like it." He came home and we talked about his homework and he was doing it, he practiced his trombone, got ready for bed without problems...I mean seriously guys, pick me up off the floor!
I went to bed so relieved. Not entirely, but so much more than normal. I felt like there's a light at the end of this dark tunnel. That he will be better and we just have to stick to it.
Of course, someone had to remind me that it won't all be peaches and cream. He woke up in the middle of the night screaming and crying from a night terror. But I was there for him, and that's all I can really do.
This morning, I swear to god, he came down singing Old McDonald had a Farm. And he kept promising his sister they would get to play all day today because he's home from school. I woke my husband up and told him we were still in the twighlight zone. He's happy too.
Well...that's probably my most optimistic post on here! I'm sorry I'm so chatty (my boss already walked by once, but I think she is too sick to notice I was here.) Thanks for listening. I will keep you all updated.
