Hi Guys,
Just an update on DS. Last time I chatted, we had experimented with Abilify and it failed miserably. So I went to see pdoc about two weeks ago, and talked to him about the Thorazine. He, apparently, did not have his notes up to date on the thorazine. So it came as a suprise that he was on it. (Frustrating, but I'm ignoring this fact for now.) So I asked if I could take him off, because I didn't think it was doing anything. The doc said sure, and if we see any hyper activity, to try the abilify again because it might work better without the thorazine.
So I took him off completely on a Saturday. The weekend went ok, but we were noticing some differences. Then I forgot to mention to the nurse at school of the med change. By Thursday, the nurse called me very upset. She said DS was not doing well in class, that he was very hyper, he was stabbing himself with his pens and pencils and throwing things around. He failed one of his writing prompt tests which was unusual. And he was just generally down and unsettled. The teacher called me a few minutes later and gave me a more detailed complaint. She said he just wasn't acting like himself. And that he usually does great with his writing because he's so creative, and that he just shut down and couldn't think of anything to write. So I called the pdoc and asked if we should add the thorazine back, or try the abilify. He said try the abilify first. So Thursday night he got his first dose, and Friday morning before school I gave him another. The nurse emailed a better report, and the teacher emailed me at the end of the day that things were much much better.
We just had a long weekend and I would say things aren't perfect, but the volumne on our issues has been turned down a little. His AM dose is very successful. But his PM dose sort of zombies him out a little. I might be giving it too early. But I've been aiming for 3, when he gets home from school. I'm going to do some research into it to see what works for others. But we're definately not seeing the huge depression mood that we saw while he was on the thorazine. So those two meds really didn't mix well together.
Well, that's all for now. Thanks for listening.
