I really love him! This morning as he was getting ready for school, I asked Chase when his grade card was coming home, he said this week sometime, then I asked him if he thought he got straight A's again this quarter, he answered that he did not know but that he did know he got an A in English (or Reading, I can't remember which), and he was relieved because he was worried about that one, then he went on to tell me a story about how the English teacher would not give him some more time to finish a poetry test, because 'everyone else got it done in the alloted time, you should have too'. He said he thought to himself that not finishing it was going to ruin his grade, and then he went to the bathroom to calm down. While he was in the bathroom, another child came in, and then he said, "And then I got sent to the principal for something I didn't even do!" Huh? I asked him what that something was, and he said that he got sent for kicking and hitting the bathroom stalls and yelling and cussing. Ok, I kinda figure he was doing all that, cuz he was mad about not finishing the test, but he emphatically denied the cussing....anyhow, I explained to him that not finishing the test was not the end of the world, yada, yada, and then he said Mr. ______________, (the principal) took care of it.
Then the bus came, and I did not understand...so once it was late enough, I called the school and left a msg for the principal to call me back. Turns out, this incident was over a month ago and Chase was just now getting around to telling me about it! The principal said Chase was still steaming once in the office, and once he got him calm, he asked what was the matter. Chase explained it to him, he told Chase not to be so upset, almost anything can be handled internally, he called the teacher and the teacher then said she would let chase have the time to finish, which ended up being about 10 minutes. The principal then went on to say we can have extended test time added to the 504 if we want to.
I explained to the principal that while we are quite proud of Chase when he gets all A's, we do not insist upon it, we are not the reason he was so upset, though we do insist on no C's if at all possible, the boys are too smart for C's. He answered that he could see that Chase is a perfectionist all on his own and that he did not ever think we were the cause of his turmoil.
The kicker is that Chase did not get written up for his behavior, or suspended.....the principal simply took care of it. Didn't even call me to complain.....
I am thinking about looking into anger management programs for chase...he needs to learn how to calm himself more effectively.
