These numbers dance around me,
Singing songs of defeat.
At first I see a three, or is it a two?
I can feel my heartbeat from my head to my toes.
It bangs my neck like a bass drum.
The cold sweat is like a second layer to my body.
My pencil makes a soft carving noise,
But nothing but scribbles comes out.
My hand is on fire, or is it my mind?
All the numbers and symbols stare me down
They laugh and sneer as warm tears tickle my cheek
My mind is a prison where I always have a life sentence.
It's like my eyes and my mind have two different brains
My eyes try to scan my paper but my mind refuses to listen
The anger brews inside me like angry waves crashing ageist rocks
All I see is red
My teeth are clenched so tightly my jaw aches
I don't get it.
Dam. Dam. Dam.
Another mistake
As if it's a surprise
So I look back down at the gang of 1, 2, and 3's
And my eyes ache in pain
For all I see is,
s'3 2 1
About me-
Hi my name is Kristin im 16 and i have a learning Disability called Dyscalculia. If you havent heard of it your're not alone, Dyscalculia is a broad term for severe difficulties in math. Im sure you heard of dislexia, Dyscalculia is kinda like that only with numbers. I see them different them most "normal" people. It almost looks like all the numbers are all on one big line and theres no space. I have a really hard time with basic math too. If you know me then you probably have seen me counting on my fingers to find out what 5+4 is. People with learning disabilities such as dyscalculia are at-risk for being seen as less capable than they are. However, they have general ability to learn that is comparable to or higher than many of their peers. They simply have specific skill weaknesses in some areas. I wrote this poem in English class not because i Dont want people to feel bad or sorry for me i wrote it because i want people to understand that im not "lazy" or "stupied" . Im just as capable as you are, i just see things in a differnt way.
For more info on Dyscalculia, or if you think you or someone you know may have it vist,
