hi there Myriad - so now i have found where you discovered ADHD Aussies United - thanks Misty! xx
Yep I have been haunting this American mob over here for some time now and they are the best bunch of ADHD people i have ever found online and are the inspiration for me choosing to start ADHD Aussies United.
I am so pleased you found us all. and anything you want to discuss i am happy to do so ..
I have a nearly 10 year old with what was originally diagnosed as ADHD , but he has co-existing conditions as well. It seems he may have Aspergers and Anxiety disorders. As well as sensory problems and the list goes on. apart from that he is completely NORMAL LMFAO.
where in Australia are yOU? I am a brisbane girl myself, born and bred.
so dont be confused by my signature. a lovely lady that owns that site agreed to put my redirection to ADHD Aussies on her site. it helps to have that WWW address.

Hi Aphrodite. I'll see you over there also at Aussies unite-an excellent effort might I say. I love the internet! I'm a Sydney gal myself and my boy has just been diagnosed with ADHD-so I am real new to this!

Myriad, How old is your boy? Is he on meds or are you trying other things first?
My daughter is 12. she was diagnosed in 3rd grade & I've learned SO much since then! Feel free to jump right in & ask any questions you might have.

Hi Misty. My boy is 8 1/2 and his dx of ADHD is very new. I'm sceptical/scared/concerned yet open minded about meds at this point. My boy is showing some signs of anxiety about school and so meds may be an option in terms of helping him to learn normally and not stand out in the classroom. Currently I'm working my way through the maze of info out there and am wondering about the next 'professional person' I should visit. I have started him on fish oil and will wait to see what happens there but in the meantime....still quite confused. School starts here (in Sydney, Australia) in about 2 weeks! I'm also worried about letting teachers know about this label-I think we may have a stigma problem in our schools and many belive it's all down to bad parenting etc. As I said, I'm still grappling with a lot of good/bad/ugly info. This site is a godsend. Thanx

Boy, you remind me so much of myself when I first heard Shannon's Dx. Only I didn't have the option of not telling the school. She was in a small private school then & they paid for a private psychiatrist to come in & evaluate her, so they knew from the beginning. They did try to push me to medicate her & we did try a few, but my daughter was extremely susceptible to various side effects. Eventually we went the fish oil route as well. It takes up to 2 months to really see the difference, but it really works! Make sure you're using an antioxidant along with it...I give Shannon 20IU vitamin E once a day.
What kind of Dr dxed your son? If it was a regular pediatrician, you're best off with a neuropsychologist, or a pediatric psychiatrist (especially if you can find one that specializes in these types of disorders) for your "next professional person".

My son is 11 3/4 now and was diagnosed when he was 8. We haven't gone the med route, but I did see positive results with the omegas, which is what you are getting in the fish oil.
If you do choose meds, your son may need to take a dose during school hours to get him through the entire day unless you use a long lasting one. You may want to ask his dr which ones are available to you if you do decide to try them.
I also suggest you have tests done on his heart as stimulants can cause a problem that you would never otherwise know about to show up. You really don't hear about that a lot but its something that can cause major problems if its there. Its always better to be safe than sorry.
