A while back Sean took Atarax for sleeping. He's been off it for quite some time.(since1st grade) It had not been a problem but now it's back. He is not able to fall asleep and comes downstairs over and over saying he cannot sleep. This can go on until midnight. Since Sean needs a lot of consistency he already has a very routine night time ritual. He showers, has a snack, and has a half hour of "quiet time" where he reads or draws etc then we put him to bed. He has a psych. appt. on Monday and I already know the psych will be quick to give him meds for this. He always asks how he is sleeping and while I know this does need to stop, I'm not sure about adding another medication to the mix. Any thoughts or suggestions? We have been dealing with a WHOLE LOT of issues with Sean's behavior lately(a whole other post which Im not sure I have the energy to type right now) and I cannot go through this up all night stuff again.

I don't remember whether you tried melatonin or benadryl. I don't know of any other non prescription sleep aids. I take trazadone. Its prescription but it was wonderful to get a decent night's sleep after weeks of not sleeping more than a couple of hours. It really eases the anxiety, restless thoughts, etc. It also helps me stay less anxious during the day. Hopefully someone here will know of an effective, safe, natural sleep aid since hitting him over the head and knocking him out isn't quite safe enough to try, tempting as it may be in the middle of the night.

Shannon has had that problem on & off her entire childhood as well. She was originally put on a prescription aid but I didn't like having her on it so we weaned her & tried Benedryl. The Benedryl worked wonderfully & since she had allergies & needed an allergy med anyway, I felt better using it. When allergy season ended we decided to try melatonin. We liked that too, especially since she can take it as needed and not need to take it every day. I still have a bottle here but she has somewhat outgrown the sleeplessness & very rarely asks for one any more.

Chase has always taken melatonin, and I found a timed release 5mg version at walgreens. It works wonders or me when I cannot fall asleep.

Thanks, I never did try the Melatonin but that is what I'm going to do. I would rather try something else first before the psych. just writes out another prescription. Walgreens is like my 2nd home so I am going to look for that tomorrow.

Psych. agreed that the melatonin is a good idea. Going to get it later-I'll let you know how it works out.

You have to be in bed and trying to go to sleep, but it helps to make me drowsy enough to fall asleep. I like the time release kind, cuz I sometimes fall asleep and then wake up at least partially during the night.
