So we were just told our Bipolar son has Encopresis too. Here's a good link to what it is if you haven't heard of it: kidshealth.org/parent/general/sick/encopresis.html#As it points out in the article, and as you can imagine, this can be very hard to deal with in school and other social settings. I'm hoping he'll be under better control by the end of summer. I just feel like this kid can't catch a break! And on the flip side, I feel like as we peel away each layer and address it, fix it (or whatever), a very strong child will appear and grow to be a wonderful human being. Anon

One of my grandsons has it also. He has to take medicine to keep his stool soft so he doesn't get constipated enough to cause a blockage. It is heartbreaking because people do assume the kid just needs to be punished severely enough to make him want to use the potty.
I do believe you are right. As you find and learn to handle each layer of symptoms, he is going to gain confidence and the battles he is going through will make him a strong, wonderful young man one day.
