Hi i am Laura and i am from Scotland, i am 22 years old and i am new to the forum. I am currently struggling with Maths at the moment and i have posted a comment on the Dyscalculia section. I am really looking for advice and support. As i don't know if i have Dyscalculia or not. I just may be slow at Maths who knows. I have been an underachiever in school but i seemed to get English after i left primary school at the age of 12. Maths however i have been underachieving in since day one of school when i was 5 years old. I received Support for Learning from about the age of 6 until i was 14 years old. Supprt received was from my class teacher and also the special ed teacher. I went to the special ed teacher for Reading/Writting/Spelling and Maths. Ye i am still quite bad at spelling but its getting better, my writing is so much better than it use to be and my reading is a hell of a lot better. But i am still not getting Maths. Anyway's hi and thanks Laura

Hi Laura! My daughter is 13 & has dyscalculia....and I'm STILL learning about it! If your not sure if you have it, it might be a good idea to get evaluated by a psych or neoropsych. Once you know for sure, there are things you can try to help you understand & go further with math. There are some links & tips in the dyscalculia section here that are worth trying.

Welcome Laura,
I've never been good at Math either and just squeeked by in college. Not sure why I had such a difficult time. I'm a HR manager which, thank goodness, doesn't require a lot of math.
I do agree with Misty. It will be worth coming up with the money to get tested rather than throwing away your money on a math class that you will likely fail.
I'm not sure if your college will make any accomidations for you if you are DX'd Dyscalculic but at least you can look into ways someone with Dyscalculic can learn the basics for passing college math.
Anyway, welcome!!!

Laura, One place to check out is your states Vocational Rehabilitiation program. They may be able to help you and it sounds like you don't have much money so you will probably qualify. If they can't help you directly they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Welcome Laura!
Is there a psychologist or advisor at the school you are going to? I really don't know anything about Scotland but it seems to me that a school anywhere should have someone you could talk to.
My suggestion is that you talk to your advisor or psych and ask them how you would go about finding out if you have a disability. With the problems you had with English also, you could also have a form of dyslexia or dysgraphia. They can both affect math, reading and writing. Being evaluated would be the best way to find out for sure.
If you can't do that or they can't help you, ask your dr, or you could call a teaching hospital that has a psych or neurological dept.

Hi Laura. Welcome. I seriously think I have dyscalculia myself. I've never even heard of it until I came to this site for my son.

charlie girl, i will look into this when we go back in September.
katiekat, ye i hadn't heard of it until October last year when i was telling a friend who has dyslexia that i use to always say i have math dyslexia. Then we googled it and here i am. I am on the dyscalucliaforum.com which is quite good. You should try it. It has really helped me get things into prespective
