DS's report card is full of A's and B's this year and the following comment came from the teacher.
C is an extremely bright, inquisitive young man who is eager to learn. He has deomonstrated that he can apply superior reasoning skills to problems and often sees the humor in things when others his age do not. He is highly respecful of others and is willing to help when he can.
If there is any one thing that shows a weakness, it would have to be that he sometimes over thinks something to where it confuses him. This is often exhibited in his reading. He will over analyze what the writer says, changing the intended meaning.
C's reading is strong. He does need to improve his vocabulary. In fact, learning higher level vocab would help his writing as well as his reading.
He is a strong math student. He asks questions when he has one, and can apply the skills he learns to his work.
Since science is an area of interest for him, he will be applying basic writing skills centering around topics in science. He currently is working on a science report about "Lady Bugs," which grew out of a game he was playing with another student.
C is a well-behaved young man. He is eager to learn and knows how to control himself when he becomes overly excited. He is a joy to have in class.
Just wanted to brag a little. I thought it was a wonderful note to receive after so many years of turmoil.

If there is any one thing that shows a weakness, it would have to be that he sometimes over thinks something to where it confuses him. This is often exhibited in his reading. He will over analyze what the writer says, changing the intended meaning. Maybe you have a college lit professor in the making. He is already reading things into what he reads that the writer probably didn't even think of. Way to go!!!!

What a glowing report. You can tell that teacher is on top of things and not just writing by rote. Woo Hoo!

Thanks guys. I haven't had a chance to write about his teacher this year, mostly since I haven't met with him yet. But he is really perfect for kids like DS. He has him in a small group called Indy's. They have independent work, so they have a list of items due at the end of the month. And that way they can work on the subject they're in the "mood" for. So if the teacher is talking math and DS isn't interested, he can pull out his writing assignment to work on it.
As the report says, the teacher noticed him and another student talking about the ladybugs that infested the school this past fall. So he told the two to do experiments on the ladybugs (like do they sit in the sun or in the shade) and to research them online and in books.
The teacher also has special jobs for each kid. He tells them that he needs babysitters. So when he lost his glasses, or needs something from the supply cabinet, he tells the helpers to do it for him. It makes them feel special to have those responsibilities. And he has a geek squad that helps with the computers and he will threaten them with "smacks" which is a kiss on the cheek if they act up. It's like he understands the group and individual within the class room.
The only downfall is the following year the kids are put back into a traditional class room setting and are getting prepared for middle school and they don't do as well. It's almost like you want to shake all the other teachers and ask them why the student has to conform back to traditional when the un-traditional worked so well.
ok, I've been rambling.
