I need opinions please! I have suspected for some time that there is something going on with my nephew. Sometimes I think, because of my career ,that I am overly sensitive and think that every child has some type of "disorder." But other times I think-Wow there is definitely something here. The first thing that sent up a red flag for me was when he was an infant and my sister started to introduce baby food. He was about 6 months old. He gagged, retched, and sometimes vomited. He never took to it. He NEVER ate it. Even at a year old he ate nothing, just drank bottle after bottle of formula then later milk. Table foods were a little better. Even at 2 years old he has a difficult time with food. It must be cut up very, very, tiny or he will choke and gag. Its really become obvious to me lately as my 8 month old Godson is catching up to him with his eating. I didnt think the eating issue by itself meant much however now that they live closer and I see him more I see many other things. I did some reading and he has many of the signs of SPD more specifically tactile defensiveness and also something social which I cannot give a name to at this point. At both his birthday and Christmas with company in the house he freaked. Refused to come off the steps and screamed, Wouldnt open presents etc. He screams when his face or hands are washed like he is on fire. When he gets his diaper changed he becomes hysterical-same thing in the bath tub. Certain clothes send him into hysterics too. He will scream "take them off" and cry until the clothing is removed. Also, this is not a sign of SPD but is something on the spectrum-echolalia. He will repeat everything back-if you say "do you want a drink?" he will say "you want a drink" never I. He is extremely bright and has been speaking in complete sentences since he was 15 months old. I think this makes it difficult for some to see deeper and that there may be a problem. My sister said something yesterday that makes me think she knows something is up "I think one day we will find out Aiden has some syndrome or something."
So, what do you think-do you think these signs warrant further investigation by a professional? Also how would you tell someone that you suspect this about their child? I dont want my sister to think Im insulting him I am just concerned.
