I e-mailed Sean's reular ed. teacher about the difficulties he is having in math. Not only can he not grasp new concepts, he still has not mastered things from 2nd grade. Like adding and subtracting-which, call me crazy but I think they're pretty important when it comes to math. She is going to talk to his special ed teacher today as she agrees he is struggling. Hopefully he will start getting pulled out for math class too. It is very important (to me anyway) that he actually LEARN and COMPREHEND what is going on-not just be squeaking by. If you do not understand basic math concepts you are lost forever. I know that well from personal experience. I don't want them just passing him through year after year while he has no idea what he's doing. Which is exactly what has been happening. They waited too long to give him the kind of help he needs. Homework now takes about 2 hours a night. The older he gets the more specialized help he is needing. I called it when he was in kindergarten but they wouldnt listen. I am grateful that he is finally getting some help but I can't help to feel that it is coming too late. I am hoping they will agree with me.

I will never understand why the schools refuse to believe a child is struggling. I sure hope this teacher comes through for you. You called it so long ago. Sending lots of good vibes you way that they agree. Let us know how it turns out.

The special ed. teacher just e-mailed me. They are going to pull him out three times a week for math. He will also go there the day before a test for a review with her. So that is good. Not surprisingly she said that Sean does not pay attention, refuses to follow directions, and rushes through his work. She said we have a lot to talk about at his IEP meeting next month. Hmmmmmmm. Well regardlessof what that's all about they are attempting to help. I guess 3rd grade is the cutoff LOL.

Oh boy, that sounds fun... ;D (The IEP) Your right about 3rd grade...it's get so much harder after that. But geez, they took their sweet old time decided if they were going to help him. I'm so happy to hear he's getting that extra time. It's a start.

It is just too sad that it takes so long to get what you knew he needed for years. I'm glad they are finally seeing the light though.

Its good to see they are finally taking his problems seriously but I agree they shouldn't have waited so long to address them.

There is steam coming out of my ears thinking of how long you have been telling them he has math issues. Grrrr. But finally, they are doing something and I'm so happy about that.
I can't help but feel sorry for Sean having to spend two hours doing homework. If they had listened to you I don't think he would be struggling quite as much.
Thank goodness Sean has you. You never give up.
