Chase is a great kid...getting good grades and all, but for the last few weeks/months I have noticed a trend that I do not like at all.
Chase has been telling little lies especially if he feels as if it will keep him out of trouble.
first time: I get a call from Jonna that Chase forwarded some text to Jacque (why a 9 year old has a cell phone is beyond me, but that is another story) that was scary. She sent it on to me and it was not a nice one...the text version of a chain letter, threatening that something horrible would happen to you if you do not forward this text to all of your contacts. I confront him, he first says some girl did it from her phone...I say ok, let me have your phone to call her and talk to her about it, he immediately admits it was him that did it, that he was scared not to forward it...I point out that if HE was scared how did he think a 9 year old girl felt, and that he did not forward it to me...why to her? He said it was an accident, he thought he checked off to exclude her off the list....<sigh> don't do it again, there is no way anyone can carry out that threat....
second time: Chase walks in the door after school and volunteers that this same girl bought an Uno game for his cell phone without his knowledge....ok, a week or so before that he had asked me if he could buy that application, and I had asked him to wait till the bill came....we had just switched plans and i wanted to see how much it was going to be first. Again, I asked him to give me the phone, I will talk to the girl, again he backs off and tells me he did it. I took his cell for a week for buying the game and for lying about it.
Today: I get a call from a friend (who also happens to be his advanced reading teacher) at the school saying that he has a big assignment that was due on Friday, its not done, she told him to finish it this weekend, he told me when I asked that he had no homework, he lazed around all weekend...she says when he did not turn it in today, she asked him why, he told her he "had no time this weekend to do it" (lie #1), then he said that "my computer is not working at home" (iffy...the internet has been in and out, I have an appointment to get my equipment outside upgraded on the 9th...but we could have gone to Jonna's, the library, Mcdonalds....and used their internet, had I KNOWN), then she says he needs to come to her classroom for study hall and work on the assignment...he refuses, says he has a big English assignment due that he has to work on....she suggests he come and work on both...he is 'testy' (her word, LOL) so she tells him fine she will just call me...he then (lie #3) tells her I am not home....so she says I will call her cell phone he tells her (lie #4) that I am at work and I will get in trouble if she calls me at work.
Now he is standing there listening to this phone call, so I ask to talk to him...he now tells the teacher that he said no such thing....is arguing with her that he never said I wasn't at home, or was at work...I get him on the phone, tell him not to argue with the teacher...he is VERY disrespectful over the phone to me, says he is NOT going to work on this during his study hall and why do I insist on putting him in advanced classes...not his fault he tests well, yada, yada, it is too hard...I tell him the year is almost over, he will finish it out as is....and if he were in regular reading we would be fighting over AR points.
I know we need to do something about the lying but what?
