My best friend has an 18 yr old son who should be graduating high school today but is not. I have known him since the minute he was born and love him like my own. He was failing 3 classes and was given the opportunity about a month ago to hand in all his missing assignments and pass. But he didnt do it...and now he will not graduate. He was diagnosed with ADHD at 4 and while he is brilliant he struggled in school his whole life. This is a kid who gets 100s on every test without opening a book, was in talented and gifted classes when he was younger, and honors courses throughout high school. However he is extremely disorganized, very easily distracted, and not motivated in the least. He always has something more important to do and totally gets like "the dog with a bone" however it's always about some irrelevant issue and NEVER school. My friend also has undiagnosed ADD or ADHD. She struggles as much as he does with organization and focus which makes it difficult for her to keep him organized.
Now because (again) of budget cuts in her town there is NO summer school at all. Instead you must pay for a correspondance class through the mail. They mail you a packet and you're on your own. Just do the work, mail it in and you'll get your diploma in August. This is his only chance to get his diploma. After that it's a GED. Horrible set up for an ADHDer. He'll never do it. My friend made a comment the other day that she wished she had been more like me when it came to homework. So that gave me an idea and she totally agreed. He will be coming to my house for summer school. Once he gets the packet we will start. He's not even allowed to open it. All work will get done at my house where there are no distractions for him. No friends calling or knocking on the door, no drum set, nothing. He also would never argue with me the way he does with her. He will sit at my dining room table, do his work, and the sooner he completes it the sooner Ill take him home. All materials will stay at my house and I will see to it that they get mailed out. I will not let this kid not get his diploma. He is too smart and does not grasp how important this is for his future. So he will be coming to KK's summer school and he WILL be leaving with a high school diploma. Wish me luck!
