Over all the meeting went splendidly. Shannon is still having issues with handing in homework & of course, its affecting her grades. Otherwise, all the news was great. They have her started in classes that will ease her into transition at the end of next year, when she graduates. Her advisory teacher is setting up some field trips to colleges that Shannon is interested in & also setting up some meetings with people that have already gone through schooling in Shannon's career choices so that Shannon can hear first hand what kinds of classes & work she'll have to do to accomplish her goals. The transition classes teach her how to do things like manage money, apply for jobs, apply for school grants, etc. Shannon actually LOVES the class.
As far as this year goes, she's actually already improving her study skills, learning to take notes, & prepping for the PSAT's. I hate3w those standardized tests! She still gets one on one help in math & some modifications there like going to a quiet room to take tests, allowed to use a calculator, etc.
Shannon is having a lot of difficulty with Spanish class. She seems to have the same mental blocks that she has with math. I'm not sure if learning a language is tied in to her math LD or not. Her advisory teacher is working on a plan that, if effective, will allow her to opt out of Spanish class after the first trimester (we have 3 trimesters instead of the 4 semesters most school have) and do some addition life skills type classes instead.
I just LOVE her 2 special ed teachers. Not only do they truly care , but they keep me informed & involved via email & phone. Looks like this year will go quite smoothly for Shannon.
